Ragnarok. He and filmmaker Taika Waititi have thankfully teamed up again to make magic happen, and the newest installment in the franchise is introducing all sorts of exciting comic storylines to the MCU.
Not only is Thor's ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) returning to the fold - but this time as the Mighty Thor wielding Mjolnir - but fans will finally meet the onscreen adaptation of the chilling Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). Between Jane's journey to being a superhero, the latest villain's terrifying rampage that's taking down gods everywhere and King Valkyrie's (Tessa Thompson) struggles adapting to her new rule, Thor is going to have plenty to shake up his quest for inner peace.
Screen Rant spoke to Hemsworth and Waititi about how Ragnarok revitalized the Thor franchise, and how much further they think they could take the series after Thor: Love And Thunder. They also answered the question everyone will be asking soon: who voices the screaming goats?
Screen Rant: Chris, you and I have something in common. We're both shredded, obviously. Same birthday: August 11.
Chris Hemsworth: No way!
[To Taika] August 16? That's a lot of Leo energy in this room.
Chris Hemsworth: A lot of Leos. [Meows]
Taika Waititi: Three lions!
I love this movie so much. I was just telling Taika how amazing it is. For you, without the shift that Ragnarok created for Thor, do you think you would still be playing Thor at this point? Or do you feel revitalized?
Chris Hemsworth: Oh, absolutely revitalized. When Thor: Ragnarok came up, and Taika and I started talking, I said, "Look, I'll do it. But I feel a little stuck with what the character is doing. I feel a little bored." And Taika said, "I'm bored of you too." [Laughs]
It was basically dismantling and destroying everything we knew, and starting again. It's completely refreshing, that experience and this one. As long as I keep getting to work with directors like this man, and cast that inspire me and bring something different out in myself and the character, then I'm down for whatever. That's what it's about.
Taika, for you, I know you're headed to a galaxy far, far away. Would you keep helming the Thor movies if Thor's journey continues? Because it would be weird without you at this point.
Chris Hemsworth: I’d be sad.
Taika Waititi: It would feel weird. I've got to be honest, I'd be disappointed in you.
Chris Hemsworth: I'd be disappointed in you if you didn't say yes to doing it.
Taika Waititi: Only if you do one will I do one.
Chris Hemsworth: The fans would be [disappointed] too.
Taika Waititi: What's great about the character is there's a longevity there. You could almost tap into it whenever you want to.
Chris Hemsworth: Yeah, he could go back...
Taika Waititi: There's all these different versions of Thor in the comics as well. There's the sort of 70-year-old Thor, so [to Chris] get comfy. This is the rest of your life.
Chris Hemsworth: This is it!
Thor has this great bro handshake in the movie. Do you guys have a handshake?
Taika Waititi: Same one.
Chris Hemsworth: Same one! [Demonstrates] Human handshake, followed by Asgardian handshake, with the snake you cannot trust. And a high-one.
We don't want to spoil it, but that's in the film.
Taika Waititi: There was other handshakes.
Chris Hemsworth: That went for about three minutes on the day.
Taika Waititi: There was a lot more other shakes. There was Odin's Raven ending on the branch. [Demonstrates]
Thor has a really great tattoo; I'm not gonna give it away. If you could commemorate your experience in the MCU with a tattoo, what would it say?
Chris Hemsworth: Well, we did it.
Taika Waititi: It would say, "I love CH." [Shows off his foot]
Chris Hemsworth: And I did that tattoo.
Taika Waititi: "I love CH." That's how I commemorated my time in the MCU.
I think this is my first feet shot in an interview. That's going straight to WikiFeet, by the way.
Chris Hemsworth: I'm open for more tattoos, if anyone wants them as well.
Who voices the screaming goats?
Chris Hemsworth: Taika.
Taika Waititi: That was just me at the end of every day.
Chris Hemsworth: And the beginning of every day.
Taika Waititi: It was me waking up and realizing I had to do this film.
I can't scream that high. I don't know who it was.
Chris Hemsworth: I was convinced it was you.
I have to go, but I just want to say thank you so much for making ABBA MCU canon. I'm a huge ABBA fan, and I really appreciate it.
Taika Waititi: Viking bands!
