The newest trailer for Avengers: Endgame saw Thor teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
This trailer offers up a lot of hints as to where Thor's story will go without really spoiling anything. These details from the trailer are the most exciting parts.
Korg the Storyteller
Emerging as a fan favorite after debuting in Thor: Ragnarok, Korg is back again and serves as the introduction to this new trailer. He can be seen telling a group of young, blue aliens a story about how Thor has saved the world countless times, got back in shape, and reclaimed his title as "the one and only Thor."
This, of course, sets up the visual gag that former love interest Jane Foster is actually Thor now. But seeing Korg take on a role of storyteller, and inevitably embellishing some of the details, is right on par for the loveable rock man. It's a great way to confirm to fans that Korg is back for this adventure while giving another taste of his quirkiness that fans love.
Uatu Has a Cameo
In the most blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment of the trailer, a statue of the Watcher known as Uatu can be seen in a shot with Jane Foster in a dark room surrounded by various statues. Uatu was the recurring "host" of the Disney+ show What If...?.
Thor: Love and Thunder is the next MCU film to release after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, two films that directly involved the multiverse. While Love and Thunder doesn't seem to have much to do with the multiverse, this is a nice nod to its existence and a subtle way of connecting this film to others.
New Asgard Looks Much Better Now
When fans last saw Valkyrie, she was charged with ruling New Asgard when Thor left to the Guardians of the Galaxy. At the time, New Asgard was just a refugee settlement in Norway. But in the trailer, New Asgard appears to have a lot of proper architecture built, as well as cruise ships coming and going.
Valkyrie figures to play another major role in Love and Thunder, so it's nice to get an early glimpse of how she's doing in her new leadership role. It's an interesting starting point for the character, who has undoubtedly grown since her last appearance.
Russell Crowe Revealed as Zeus
Russell Crowe was confirmed as a cast member in Love and Thunder a while back but the specific role was kept secret. Fan theories that Crowe was playing Zeus, though, popped up almost immediately.
In this trailer's final scene, Crowe is officially confirmed as playing Zeus. It'll be interesting to see how the God of Thunder fans have come to know and love will react to meeting a different God of Thunder.
Thor's Workout Montage
A major plot point in Avengers: Endgame focused on how much Thor had let himself go, both mentally and physically, after Thanos' finger-snap victory. As Korg alluded to, Thor has regained his form, and this is hinted at with what looks like a workout montage.
Everyone loves a good workout montage, and Thor's would seem to be heavily motivated by story. There is also a brief shot of him pulling the Benatar, Peter Quill's new ship, which is a comical yet apt way for Thor to get in a good workout.
Thor in the Nude
The funniest gag from the trailer comes at the very end between Thor and Zeus. Thor, in some sort of disguise, has seemingly been captured and shackled. Zeus uses magic to rip off Thor's disguise but accidentally strips him completely naked, with a pixelated butt being revealed to a large crowd.
The crowd is shocked, with several fainting, and Valkyrie has a funny line about "eventually" helping Thor out while she pops grapes like they're popcorn. Not only is this scene played for laughs, but it hints at the potentially adversarial relationship between Thor and Zeus.
First Look at Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher
Christian Bale's casting as the villainous Gorr the God Butcher has been cause for anticipation since the moment it was first announced. Bale was noticeably absent in the teaser trailer for Love and Thunder, but he features prominently in this one.
The first thing people noticed was how different Bale's iteration of Gorr the God Butcher looks from his comic book counterpart. His appearance has drawn comparisons to Voldemort, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The glimpses of Gorr from this trailer suggest a villain befitting of that kind of legendary evil.
Gorr's Motives are Revealed
Gorr promises to be a menacing villain and landing a versatile actor like Christian Bale to portray him promises as much. But this trailer also shed some light on why Gorr has the title of the God Butcher.
In the trailer, Gorr can be heard explaining that he believes the gods to be selfish and that they only care about themselves. For this reason, Gorr says that "All gods must die." This obviously puts Gorr into conflict with Thor, but it offers some hints as to how Zeus might play into the story as well.
Possible Confirmation of the Necrosword
At several points in the trailer, Gorr can be seen wielding a pretty gnarly sword, including stabbing it into a planet that seemingly gets destroyed soon after. Some have taken this weapon to be the Necrosword of comics lore.
For those unfamiliar with Gorr, his signature weapon is the Necrosword. This is notable because the weapon originates from the planet of Klyntar, which is also where the Venom symbiote originates from. Now that Venom has (sort of) been incorporated into the MCU, this could potentially open up a crossover down the road. Even if that doesn't happen, it would be great to see the Necrosword in action.
Jane Doesn't Seem Too Hung Up on Thor
Jane Foster hasn't shown up since Thor: The Dark World (unless you count the cameo in Endgame that repurposed stock footage of Natalie Portman), but she's back now in a big way. The romance that she once had with Thor was effectively over in her last appearance, and the trailer doesn't suggest that's changed.
When Foster asks Thor if it's been "like three, four years" since the two last saw each other, Thor desperately responds "Eight years, seven months, and six days... give or take." Judging by Jane's face after this line, she clearly hasn't thought about Thor as much as he has about her. That will surely make for an interesting and funny dynamic, especially as Thor comes to grips with Jane taking over his mantle.
