The world of The Vampire Diaries is a world where everyone's lives are constantly in danger, and lines are being drawn or characters are choosing sides on a nearly constant basis. And, when things are always a matter of life and death, it's not surprising when the relationships between characters become very intense.
In the best circumstances, the bonds between the characters in the show grow deeper and stronger. But in many cases, the antagonism between two people only gets worse and worse. So, in the world of TVD, who hates each other the most, or who had the most memorable and iconic stormy relationships in the series?
Alaric & Damon
Damon and Alaric may have grown into good friends over the course of the series, but their later friendship made it easy to forget that Alaric basically came to Mystic Falls because he wanted to get revenge against Damon.
Alaric originally believed that Damon had murdered his wife (and shockingly, Elena's biological mother) Isobel, and came to town in order to give Damon the justice that he believed he deserved (before he discovered that Damon had actually made Isobel into a vampire, at her request).
Bonnie & Damon
Although Damon isn't typically very nice to strangers, he apparently has a real knack for charming people who hate him into loving him. Damon and Bonnie eventually became besties, but early on, Bonnie and Damon outright hated each other.
They threatened each other constantly, and when Bonnie was feeling frustrated she often relieved her stress by making the blood vessels in Damon's head explode.
Stefan & Klaus
Klaus has always been desperate for friends but terrible at making them, and while Klaus managed to develop a serious brotherly bond with Stefan while Stefan was on a blood bender, their reunion wasn't quite as happy as Klaus had hoped.
Stefan absolutely hated Klaus for getting him back on human blood and taking him on his cross-country Stefan was one of the few characters who managed to exact some level of revenge on Klaus.
Kai & Jo
Quarrels between siblings is obviously a pretty strong theme within The Vampire Diaries, but the whole concept of the Gemini Coven and one twin sucking the literal life out of another takes it to a completely different level.
However, while most siblings don't want to siphon their brother or sister to death, Kai was more than happy to kill his twin sister Jo. And pretty much everyone else in his family along with her.
Tyler & Klaus
When it comes to getting people to hate them, it's hard to know whether Klaus or Damon reigns supreme. However, there's something to be said for the fact that Klaus can't even get people who are sired to him to actually like him.
Tyler was initially Team Klaus after he Klaus started ruining Tyler's life, they began a grudge match that resulted in a lot of murder and mayhem.
Klaus & Rebekah
Klaus and Rebekah have one of the most complex sibling relationships in the series. They are tough people to get along with, so honestly, Klaus is one of the few people who actually cares for Rebekah, and Rebekah is one of the few people who loves Klaus.
But with that said, they also seem to hate each other and love each other in equal measure, and watching the two of them constantly screw up each other's relationships and plans was fun.
Kai & Bonnie
On of being a murderous, evil family annihilator, Kai was put into a permanent time out in his very own prison dimension. He had been alone for years, until Bonnie and Damon showed up.
And while both Bonnie and Damon had no love lost for this little jerk, it seems like Kai took an exceptional amount of pleasure in tormenting Bonnie and trying to use her extraordinary power for his own purposes.
Klaus & Elijah
The Mikaelsons are undeniably one of the most dysfunctional families in TV history, and Klaus and Elijah managed to take that dysfunction to their greatest extremes.
The relationship got even heavier on The Originals, but even in The Vampire Diaries they were constantly attempting to trick, torment, or outright murder each other one minute, and then fighting to the death to save each other the next.
Stefan & Damon
Damon and Stefan's brotherly bond is at the heart of The Vampire Diaries, however, their relationship was bad a lot more often than it was good. Even when they were still human they were in constant competition, and their transformation into vampires only exacerbated those issues tenfold.
They couldn't let go of each other, but they couldn't let go of their enmity either, which wound up with the two of them torturing each other for decades.
Katherine & Elena
Although there is a lot of appeal to stormy relationships that transform into better friendships, it's safe to say that the most iconic and solid feud in The Vampire Diaries is between Katherine and Elena.
Katherine seemed completely obsessed with ruining Elena's life, Elena gave an unwilling Katherine her human life back, and Katherine even stole Elena's body and tried to steal her life right along with it. It's hard to imagine a more intense conflict.
