Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Stolen Girl episode 4

For the first time since Cinderella) is motivated to kidnap a child. However, an important question remained: Why Lucia? Part of me believed she may have chosen Elisa's (Denise Gough, Andor) daughter at random, but Episode 4 reveals there's more to the story.

With the finale airing next week, I've realized that I'll miss these characters and the depth their internal conflicts add to the narrative. As a fan of weekly television with 20-episode seasons, I didn't expect to feel much attachment within such a short period of time. Episode 4 kept me thoroughly engaged throughout the hour, and left me pondering the events long after the credits rolled. But regardless of my newfound interest in the miniseries and what it offers, I can't imagine my investment in the psychological drama extending beyond the five episodes it's been allotted.

Rebecca's Connection To The Inmate Is A Compelling Twist

Marcus Turner Went To Jail For Manslaughter

Selma (Ambika Mod, Netflix's One Day) continues to prove that investigative journalism is her calling, making a discovery that both Elisa and the police have failed to uncover. She digs into Marcus Turner's manslaughter trial and requests unreleased images from the press conference. It's in these photos that Selma recognizes Rebecca, whose real name is Nina Thibault. The caption labels her as the wife of Nicolas Thibault and mother of Rose Thibault, both of whom are deceased.

After speaking with Selma, Elisa visits Marcus in jail to ask if anyone else knows the truth about what happened the day of the accident. Elisa's concern makes it evident that she was involved, and may have even been the one driving the car. Marcus confesses that Nina visited the prison, but he withheld whatever secret Elisa is trying to keep under wraps. The episode takes another turn when it's revealed that George is actually Marcus' son, not Fred's.

All evidence suggests that Marcus volunteered to take the fall for Elisa's crime, landing him in jail.

However, several questions remain. How did Rebecca learn the truth about what happened that day? And does Fred know that George isn't his biological child? Elisa claims that she and Marcus weren't having an affair, which makes her relationship with Fred even more puzzling. With so much to resolve in its final episode, I'm worried The Stolen Girl may not have enough time to give each storyline the attention it deserves.

The Stolen Girl Finale Is Delivering The Team-Up I've Been Hoping For

Elisa And Selma Are Tracking Down Rebecca

Selma in The Stolen Girl Episode 1

From the get-go, I assumed that Elisa and Selma's dynamic would be front and center in the miniseries. While that hasn't proven to be the case, Episode 4 sets the stage for a team-up between the women before The Stolen Girl concludes. Elisa begs Selma not to go to the police with her findings, as it would result in her arrest when she has a lead on Lucia in Toulon. The journalist has conditions, such as dropping the complaint against her recent article. Yet, there was one in particular that I was holding my breath for.

The Stolen Girl Episode 3 Review: I Wish The Miniseries Hadn't Faked Its Best Twist

The Stolen Girl episode 3 presents a game-changing twist that captured my attention, but the latest installment abandons its most compelling plot yet.

The words, "I'm coming with you," were exactly what I wanted to hear, and I can't wait to see what the journey looks like for the begrudging allies. Elisa has agreed to tell Selma everything, which will clearly serve as a way to give the audience long-awaited answers. It's no secret that I've had reservations about the predictability of the series, and I still believe that it won't leave a lasting impact on viewers. Still, Episode 4 stands out as the best installment of The Stolen Girl, as the revelations elevate the psychological drama in an unexpected way.

The Stolen Girl is available to stream on Disney+ worldwide with new episodes airing Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on Freeform.
