The annual Steam Game of the Year winners have been announced, and the winner of the 2024 esteemed Game of the Year prize is Black Myth: Wukong. Wukong was also nominated for the Game of the Year award at the 2024 Game Awards in November, but lost out to Astro Bot. The title did win a few other awards, including the Best Action Game and Players' Voice awards, but it ultimately fell short of taking home the ultimate title.

Now Black Myth: Wukong can finally claim the prestigious GOTY title from The Steam Awards, the results of which were posted on the Steam website today. In addition to netting the Game of the Year award, Black Myth: Wukong has also won the Outstanding Story-Rich Game Award for its excellent storytelling, and the Best Game You Suck At Award for its unforgiving gameplay.

The Game Awards 2024: 10 Games To Get On Your Wishlist Immediately

While there were plenty of games announced in the 2024 Game Awards, there are 10 games to get on your wishlist as soon as possible.

Two more unexpected titles to show up in the awards are Farming Simulator 25, which was singled out for its relaxing and cozy vibes, and the indie Liar's Bar. The latter was only released two months ago, but it's already become popular for its unique approach to gameplay that has players lying and bluffing their way through card game matches.

Black Myth: Wukong Is A Well-Deserved GOTY Win

Black Myth: Wukong, inspired by the classical Chinese story Journey to the West, was the first major title for stuido Game Science which was formed in 2014 by several ex-Tencent developers. Although the company had made two games in the 2010s, Wukong was its debut large-scale project. The title sold over 20 million units in its first month after it released in August 2024, making it an instant success. It won players over with a combination of the unique setting, breathtaking visuals, and a challenging but simplified spin on Souls-like mechanics.

The popularity and success of the game made many believe that it had a shot at winning Game of the Year at the Game Awards this year. Among those who had their hopes high was the head of Game Science, Feng Ji, who sounded quite disappointed about not winning in a quote from PC Gamer after the awards ceremony. "I must it, there’s a sense of loss and regret," said Ji. "The games nominated this year were all exceptional, but honestly, I still can’t figure out what the criteria were for Game of the Year."

Black Myth: Wukong and all the other winners of the 2024 awards are much-loved titles chosen by and voted on by the fans. In a way, winning Game of the Year and two other awards at The Steam Awards this year is a tale of redemption for the beautiful title.
