Reviews for The Pitt season 1 have been generally very positive from critics and the show has been a major viewership success for Max, with the streamer officially renewing it for season 2 in mid-February.

In a recent interview with Variety, Wyle reveals that he's currently in the writers' room for The Pitt season 2, with plans to start filming this June. The series is eyeing a season 2 premiere in January 2026, with Max planning to release new episodes of the show every year. As for season 2's story, it is expected that the sophomore outing will pick up 10 months after the events of season 1, when Dr. Michael Robinavitch "no longer is able to pretend to himself that he doesn’t need help,” Wyle teases.

So far, relatively little has been revealed about The Pitt season 2 in of character specifics, but Gemmill did recently confirm to Deadline that the sophomore outing will take place during a very busy July 4th weekend. Season 1, by contrast, takes place during a fairly regular September. Though not yet confirmed, the reveal that season 2 will take place during one weekend suggests it will be retaining season 1's real-time structure, which has been a major source of praise.

The fact that Max has plans for more of The Pitt season 2 also speaks to the show's performance thus far. On The Pitt's cast, and the remixing of medical drama tropes. The audience-driven Popcornmeter score is lower at 79%, but this is seemingly not reflected in viewership, with The Pitt's premiere becoming one of Max's top 5 original series premieres of all time earlier this year.

The Max Series Has The Ingredients For Longevity

It's hard to present a drastically new take on the medical drama. Long-running shows like ER, which Wyle also starred in, and Grey's Anatomy, have ensured that a lot of ground has now been covered. It's still a genre that's popular with audiences, however, and The Pitt has capitalized on this by updating the formula and aiming it at more mature audiences, with the Max streaming home meaning it doesn't have to adhere to the more strict regulations of a network TV show.

If season 2 can keep the intensity high while digging deeper into characters like Dr. Robby, it seems likely to recapture the success of season 1. In addition to featuring plenty of medical emergencies, The Pitt excels because it explores the lives of the doctors dealing with these emergencies, and Wyle's tease suggests the sophomore outing won't be forgetting about this important aspect of the show. With The Pitt season 2 going to camera this summer, it hopefully won't be long before audiences get a look at the new episodes.
