There is no character in The Office who is quite like Dwight.
While Jim serves as the cool everyman, Dwight takes on the role of his weird and over-the-top counterpart. He cares about many things, including beet farming, martial arts, and his job at Dunder Mifflin. Though his common sense can be a little shaky at times, he always remains dedicated to his work.
It's time to head back to Scranton! Here are all the ways Dwight remains consistent throughout the series, as well as the ways in which he evolves by the end.
STAYED THE SAME: He Had A Strong Sense Of Justice
Dwight is characterized by a drive for truth and fairness throughout the entire series.
When he finds a piece of a t in the parking lot, he searches for the person who smoked it. Later, when Roy runs into the office to attack Jim, Dwight is there to defend him with a can of pepper spray.
Dwight likes to put people in their place. He even cites Judge Judy and Vic Mackey from Shield as people he ires for doing the same.
CHANGED: He Became A Father
Though Angela marries Senator Robert Lipton, there was some overlap between her relationship with him and her affair with Dwight. After Angela has her baby, Dwight tries to prove that he is the father, but the paternity test comes back negative.
Eventually, Angela its that the baby is actually Dwight’s. He is overjoyed to have a little Schrute.
STAYED THE SAME: He Was Easily Pranked
It’s no secret that Dwight is gullible. Jim manages to prank him through the entire series, and every time Dwight tries to outsmart him, it backfires.
The first prank that ticks Dwight off is when Jim puts his stapler in jello. The final prank Dwight is a victim to comes when Jim reveals he can’t be best man at his wedding, because Michael is ready and waiting in his place.
CHANGED: He Reconciled With Jim
While Dwight’s competitive relationship with Jim continues through nearly the entire series, the two put their differences behind them by the end.
In Season 9, Jim suggests to David Wallace that Dwight be made Regional Manager because he’s more ionate about Dunder Mifflin than anyone else. This has Dwight appointing Jim as Assistant to the Regional Manager and even including him in his wedding activities.
STAYED THE SAME: He ired Michael
Dwight respects Michael more than anyone else in the office. Though he frequently kisses up to him, it’s out of a true iration rather than a cheap attempt to climb the ranks.
Though Michael cares about Dwight, he sometimes uses him because he knows he’ll do his bidding. This occasionally caused tension between the two, but Dwight’s loyalty always found a way to reemerge.
This is why Dwight is so excited when Jim pulls the aforementioned best man trick.
CHANGED: He Got Married
Of course, you can only have a best man if you’re getting married.
Dwight finally tied the knot with Angela in the series finale. Though he had at first intended to propose to farm girl Esther, he realizes his true feelings for Angela and asks to marry her, even if Philip is not his actual son. Because Dwight wants to marry Angela for her — and not just his potential child — she agrees.
STAYED THE SAME: He Stuck To His Roots
Dwight comes from a German farm family full of traditions and customs. Though Dwight is first a paper salesman, he is second the manager of Schrute Farms. He runs a bed and breakfast there and cultivates a ion for beets.
One Schrute tradition is to get married standing in the grave you will be buried in. This is why at his wedding to Angela, he does just this.
CHANGED: He Became Manager
It is Dwight’s longtime wish to become manager of Dunder Mifflin. While it takes a long time to make this dream a reality, Dwight is awarded with a title change by the end of the series.
For most of The Office, Dwight holds the assistant to the regional manager position. He even quits Dunder Mifflin at one point to work a Staples, but Michael gets him back.
After Michael leaves to be with Holly, Deangelo Vickers steps in as regional manager of the Scranton branch. After he gets injured, Dwight takes the role of acting manager, but is pulled down from his position after he shoots a gun in the office. It takes a while, but finally, he gets this role back permanently.
STAYED THE SAME: He Loved Angela
Yes, it took a whole nine seasons for Angela and Dwight to end up together. But also, their attraction to one another was evident in Season 1.
Angela and Dwight's affair is a running story line of the series. While it takes a while for their co-workers to catch on, these two constantly sneak around both at work and outside of it.
Though Angela gets engaged to Andy at one point and married to Senator Robert Lipton at another, she ultimately comes back to Dwight, and the two continue living happily together.
CHANGED: He Became Nicer
Though Dwight isn’t usually mean, he can come off pretty cold at times. Even in the season finale, it’s revealed he harshly fired Kevin with a goodbye cake. However, later in the same episode, Dwight reconciles with Kevin after encountering him at the bar he runs.
When Jim and Pam tell Dwight that they’re going to quit, Dwight insists on firing the pair instead so that they can end up with severance packages. Though the old Dwight would have been overjoyed to see Jim leave the office, the new Dwight is going to miss his pal.
