The Masked Singer Season 13’s Oscar De La Hoya Had The “Best Time” Of His Life
“You Can Be Yourself...”
Oscar revealed that becoming Fuzzy Peas was easy for him because the mask allowed him to show his personality, but there were some challenges because the costume was so large. He explained, “You know the transformation into Fuzzy Peas wasn't that different as how I live without the mask and what my personality is.”
Oscar continued, “But it was funny because that costume is so big, right? And once you put it on, you feel claustrophobic, you kind of panic a little, right? [You think], ‘Oh my gosh, am I gonna miss the words? Am I not gonna hit my mark? Am I gonna bump into something?’ Because you literally can't see from the mask.”

Grammy-Nominated Singer Oscar Sang His Go-To Karaoke Song On The Masked Singer Premiere
“I Sing ‘La Bamba’ All The Time...”
When it came to choosing his songs, Oscar revealed that The Masked Singer gives the contestants options. He explained,“They give you a couple of options, and you have a pre-interview before you start the show. [They ask] ‘what kind of music do you like?’ And I did an album when I was like twentysomething years old back in the day. And it got nominated for a Grammy and all that. So it's like, I guess they must have studied like my whole life, I don't know.”
Oscar then shared that his go-to karaoke song is “La Bamba,” so he decided to sing it on premiere night. He said, “So they gave me those options and I picked ‘La Bamba.’ It helped that I love singing karaoke. And I sing ‘La Bamba’ all the time. So it kind of helped a little.”

I'm very competitive, but I wasn't there to say, ‘Okay I’m gonna win this. This is mine. I have talent and I can sing.’ No, I was more like, ‘You know what? Just have a good time. Whatever happens, whatever fate is destined for you. Just go have a good time. That's it.’ And that's what I did. And I had the time of my life.”
Oscar Showcased His Real Personality During The Masked Singer & The Masked Dancer
“I Can Be Myself...”
In 2020, Oscar competed in The Masked Dancer as Zebra, and placed fourth. He said that his experience on The Masked Dancer was different from The Masked Singer because he "can't dance." Oscar explained, "Yeah, they're different. Yeah, I mean two left feet. Obviously. I mean, I can’t dance to save my life."
However, both The Masked Dancer and The Masked Singer allowed him to showcase his real personality in a way that he couldn’t as a professional boxer. He shared, “It's so funny because when they asked me to do The Masked Dancer, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Okay, I can be myself, but nobody knows who I am. So I can be silly. My real personality can come out.’”
Oscar Shared That The Masked Singer Was More Nerve-Wracking Than Boxing
“You Feel Claustrophobic...”
Oscar explained that he couldn't always show his true personality in the boxing world. He said, “A lot of times, like in the boxing industry that I'm in, the misperception is that, ‘Oh well, you guys have to be tough and mean and you can't smile.’ But [The Masked Singer] is on the contrary. This for me was an opportunity to have people, have the world, see who I really am. And, behind those masks, my gosh, you can tell like I was just giddy and just having a great [time] ... I was like a little kid. It was so funny. I was a little kid. It was funny.”
Oscar shared that boxing and The Masked Singer aren't all that different. He explained, “So when you're in the dressing room, and you're going to get ready to go out and fight ... Let's say you're at Madison Square Garden. And I'm in the dressing room and they call you. ‘Okay, 5 minutes!’ So then the adrenaline, the butterflies. You're nervous. You're never scared. You're just nervous.”
Oscar continued, “And so when you come out of the tunnel and you see all those thousands of people, you're still feeling nervous, you're feeling a little claustrophobic. Wow. Like ‘My gosh, this is like a lot of people,’ but once I step inside the ring, it's like, ‘Okay. Time to do my job.’ Same thing with The Masked Singer.”
Oscar recounted his experience of being backstage at The Masked Singer. He said, “So I was in the dressing room. They call you and you're like, ‘Oh, my gosh, it's time.’ Once they put on the mask when you're behind the stage, then you really get claustrophobic and you get just a little nervous. But once the music starts, it's like, ‘Okay, let's go. Time to have fun. That’s it.’”

The Masked Singer Season 12: Boyz II Men’s 10 Performances As Buffalos Ranked
As The Masked Singer season 12's Buffalos, Boyz II Men stampeded through the competition. Here are there 10 performances from the show ranked.
Oscar then shared that being on The Masked Singer was similar to being in the boxing ring. He said, “So it's almost similar. It's similar to boxing and to performing inside the ring. The Masked Singer I think was a little more nerve-wracking because of all the elements that I had around me.”
Oscar explained how his Fuzzy Peas mask made for a more challenging experience. He shared, “For instance, when I put on the mask, because it's so big, now you feel claustrophobic. You can't really see side to side. You can’t really move. So when you're going to do your choreography, your dancing, you're like bumping into things and you're like, ‘Oh my gosh, I missed my step.’ So that's why I think the smartest thing you can ever do, anybody who's listening here and you're going to be on The Masked Singer ... Just have a good time. That's it.”
Oscar added that being unmasked in the boxing ring put a lot more pressure on him than being anonymous behind his Masked Singer costume. He said, “It's just a lot of pressure. It's a lot, a lot of pressure. I mean like being in the limelight? I was counting the years--like 30 plus years--since I won the Olympic gold medal in 1992 in Barcelona, and my life just changed. So it's been a lot of pressure, a lot, a lot of pressure. So when I was called for the Masked Dancer, the Masked Singer, it's like, ‘Wait, I can be behind the mask?! Wait a minute! Nobody's gonna know who I am?! I'm in! Count me in!’”

I mean, it was hilarious... Pitbull. I mean, I was trying to channel my Puss in Boots kind of character [because of] Antonio Banderas."Oscar then demonstrated what he meant by speaking in Puss in Boots’ voice, saying,“Oh! How you doing? Fuzzy Peas!”
Oscar added, “It was just hilarious. Yeah, I had a blast. I had a ball. But I think at one point they mentioned something about the Oscars. And I was behind the mask like, ‘Hello, it's me! I'm Oscar! I’m Oscar!’ Yeah, we had a blast. Somebody had mentioned ... was it Mario Lopez? They mentioned somebody [and] I was like, ‘Oh my, you're far from it. My God, you're far from it! It's Oscar! It’s Oscar! It’s Oscar!’ It was fun!”

And there’s some songs there that are incredible that haven't been released.”
Oscar talked about one of his favorite songs from the album. He shared, “Like for instance, there's a song that Diane Warren wrote for me called ‘With These Hands.’ Diane Warren is Diane Warren! It talks about [how] these hands can knock you out. And these hands are hard and tough, but they can also caress you. They can also hold you. They're also gentle. So it's a beautiful song.”
Oscar shared his future plan for his album. He said, “Maybe I might talk to [someone] like [DJ and record producer] Steve Aoki or something, right? And have them remix some club music or something with my album. You know, I don't know. Who knows. We’ll see. But it definitely sparked something. The Masked Singer definitely sparked something in me.”
