Warning! The article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3 finale.
The Mandalorian’s season 3 finale sets up Din Djarin’s future role in the galaxy and teases a reunion with Ahsoka Tano and a confrontation with Thrawn. A lot happened in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 8 “Chapter 24 – The Return,” as the Mandalorians finally reclaimed Mandalore, Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) was seemingly defeated, and Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) officially adopted Grogu as his son. Now that the overarching Mandalore plot has come to a satisfying end, Din Djarin and Grogu will be making their own way through the galaxy again, and the final few scenes of the episode hinted at a return to The Mandalorian’s original weekly adventure structure – but with one core difference.
The Mandalorian was the first show in the so-called Mandoverse, the setup for a saga that would depict what happened to the galaxy between Star Wars’ original trilogy and the sequel trilogy. It hasn’t been about just Din Djarin and Grogu for a long time, as familiar faces like Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano, and even Luke Skywalker have made their way into the narrative. With the Ahsoka show, which will introduce Star Wars Rebels’ characters into live-action for the first time and detail Grand iral Thrawn’s nefarious Imperial plans, the Mandoverse keeps on growing, and Din Djarin is more likely to be a part of it now than ever before.
Din Djarin's New Republic Role Sets Up Ahsoka Reunion & Fighting Against Thrawn
In the final few scenes of The Mandalorian’s season 3 finale, the Armorer (Emily Swallow) tells Mando that he must take Grogu on adventures throughout the galaxy. But, now that Din Djarin has adopted Grogu as his own son, he realizes that he needs to set some sort of example for him and continue to help the galaxy in whatever way he can. Enter Captain Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), as Din Djarin negotiates a new role for himself as an off-the-books Ranger for the New Republic, hunting down Imperial remnants. This not only sets up the basic premise for The Mandalorian season 4 but could also set up future confrontations with Thrawn and a team-up with Ahsoka.
The Mandalorian is no stranger to big cameos. If Din Djarin ends up searching for scattered Imperials across the galaxy, there’s no reason for Ahsoka not to show up again in future episodes of The Mandalorian, perhaps with a few of Star Wars Rebels’ Ghost crew in tow. The same can be said for Thrawn; The Mandalorian’s next season will likely act as the main setup for the recently announced movie, and it would seem an unlikely waste to relegate Thrawn’s role to one season of Ahsoka. It’s much more plausible that Thrawn will be the overarching antagonist for the remainder of the Mandoverse narrative, and Din Djarin and Grogu could become a big part of that story.
Will Din Djarin Return In Ahsoka's TV Show? It Now Seems Likely
It’s now equally likely that Din Djarin could show up in Ahsoka’s TV show. Din Djarin and Ahsoka met during her initial search for Grand iral Thrawn, and there’s no reason he can’t be a continued part of it. Much like Ahsoka’s role in The Mandalorian season 2, Din Djarin’s role would probably be limited to one episode of Ahsoka, but that could be enough to make an impact and connect Ahsoka to the next season of The Mandalorian. These stories are working towards something, the characters share common interests. Thrawn is the ultimate enemy. The more these characters can rely on each other, the better.
Additionally, as Din Djarin is essentially becoming a Ranger of the New Republic, he now has a connection to Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios. Zeb, an integral member of Rebels’ Ghost crew, had a brief, but impactful cameo in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 5. Given Ahsoka functions as a live-action sequel to Rebels, Din Djarin’s newfound connection to Zeb could be how he gets involved in this larger, all-encoming fight against Thrawn. Whatever comes next in The Mandalorian and the Mandoverse at large, Din Djarin and Grogu won’t be sitting on the sidelines.
