After dating 22 bachelorettes in their 60s and 70s, Gerry, a 72-year-old retired restaurateur, gave his final rose to Theresa, a 70-year-old financier. After a season of getting to know each other, Gerry proposed, and Theresa said yes. The two appeared deeply in love and wasted no time planning their wedding.

Gerry and Theresa's Golden Bachelor wedding took place just a few weeks after their engagement was made public. The highly anticipated wedding event aired on January 4. The wedding was attended by several Bachelor Nation stars, including many of the women from The Golden Bachelor. Theresa and Gerry's popularity grew because of how they represented the hope of finding love later in life. Therefore, it was surprising when The Golden Bachelor couple announced their split in April and are close to finalizing their divorce.

There had been some speculation about whether Gerry and Theresa had signed a prenup, and that question was recently answered. According to court documents obtained by Entertainment Tonight, it's clear Gerry and Theresa did have a prenuptial agreement in place before getting married. The Golden Bachelor couple knew not to enter into a marriage with a near stranger without financial protection in place. Since Gerry and Theresa never even lived together, disentangling their lives should be fairly easy. The couple agreed to waive a final hearing, so they're close to finalizing their divorce.

Though g a prenup likely wasn't any fun for Gerry and Theresa, they're probably glad the document was in place.

The Golden Bachelor season 1 was a whirlwind for Gerry and Theresa, whose love story played out for the world to see. Gerry was announced as the lead of The Bachelor spin-off in July 2023. Theresa and the other 21 women chosen to vie for Gerry's heart were announced in August 2023. Before his time as The Golden Bachelor, Gerry was married to his high school sweetheart, Toni, for 43 years until she ed away in 2017 after a brief illness. Gerry's story was that he hadn't dated since her death, but that turned out to be untrue.

During the season, it was revealed Gerry had a serious live-in girlfriend at one point and was not completely honest about his professional life.

Like Gerry, Theresa was also a widower. Her beloved husband, William Nist, ed away several years ago, and she was finally ready for love again. Theresa and Gerry hit it off right away, from the moment Theresa stepped out of the limousine on night one, pretending to be naked under her coat. She, of course, wasn't naked under her coat, but the cute bit charmed Gerry. From that moment on, Theresa was one of the front-runners throughout the season.

In the end, Gerry whittled down his 22 options to two women: Theresa and 65-year-old fitness instructor Leslie Fhima. Though Gerry told Leslie she was "the one," he gave his final rose to Theresa. Leslie was blindsided by Gerry's decision and went home heartbroken. Despite the crushing heartbreak, Leslie was at the Golden Bachelor wedding, smiling the whole time.

Why Gerry & Theresa Broke Up

Location, Location, Location

Though Gerry and Theresa fell in love on The Golden Bachelor, they couldn't figure out how to blend their lives. Perhaps they got carried away during the filming of the season, but back in the real world, reality took its toll. With Gerry living in Indiana and Theresa in New Jersey, the marriage turned into a long-distance relationship, which became impossible to sustain. Neither wanted to make the ultimate sacrifice of leaving their children and grandchildren, as well as the rest of their lives behind.

This is understandable, as most people their age have lived full lives and would be hard-pressed to uproot their world for a reality dating show romance.

They're Both Putting Family First

Since the official end of his marriage, Gerry has focused on being with family. Gerry has always put his family first. Not wanting to be apart from his family was a big part of the reason his marriage to Theresa didn't work, so, understandably, he was leaning on them during his divorce.

The Golden Bachelor fans give Gerry a hard time, but they should that he's going through a very public breakup and deserves some grace.

For her part, Theresa has also been spending more time with her family and friends since her split from The Golden Bachelor. She has also leaned into her hobbies, especially her ion for gardening. Whatever Theresa's doing is working for her because she appears to be doing quite well since the breakup. In addition to her personal life, Theresa has a successful career in the finance industry, so she also has work to focus on.

Though the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelor ended in divorce, neither Gerry nor Theresa is bitter about it. When The Golden Bachelor contestant Joan Vassos was chosen to be The Golden Bachelorette, both Gerry and Theresa congratulated her enthusiastically. Gerry posted a note to the 61-year-old school on Instagram in May 2024. His note read, in part, "FROM ONE GOLDEN TO ANOTHER....RELAX, BREATHE AND ENJOY." Though the process didn't work for Gerry and Theresa, neither seemed to regret the experience.
