The Far Side has its share of comic strips featuring characters who are on the older side. Since it is The Far Side, they are typically shown in pretty far out scenarios if not outright bizarre and surreal situations. No one is safe from parody in The Far Side, no matter what their age.

Far Side loves to depict 'second childhood' in a funny way, making fun of stereotypical assumptions while also imagining elders getting up to some outrageous adventures. Here are Far Side's 10 funniest comics that celebrate old age.

10 "Pinocchio In His Later Years"

Far Side Takes Aim at Disney's Little Wooden Boy

far side comic where pinocchio is an old man

Talking to his grandchildren from his rocking chair, Pinocchio, in his old age, must have been telling some exaggerated stories, because his nose has grown dramatically. His wife catches him in his obvious lie, asking him what fake story he is filling the kids' heads with. Sharing life experiences and regaling the younger generation with tall tales is a highlight of getting older, something Pinocchio is shown to agree with. Larson frequently took aim at Pinnochio, even outside the context of old age, with a surprising number of Far Side strips mocking the iconic character.

9 "She's On Your Case"

Far Side's April 8, 1981 Comic

far side old woman in bumper car

A great aspect of getting older is that you can embrace child-like, fun behavior once again. This Far Side comic imagines an older woman who acts on her need for speed and engages her inner child all in one sitting. In The Far Side, two youngsters try to steer away as fast as possible from an older woman who is gunning after them, or on their case as one of the kids puts it, to hit them with her bumper car.

It is fun to see the woman get so into the bumper cars, but she got maybe a little too into it, scaring the two kids with her ion. Seeing the look of mischievous glee on the woman's face, the two kids know they are in some serious trouble. Here, Gary Larson celebrates the freedom that comes with old age.

8 "The Old Cartoonists' Home"

Far Side's October 18, 1988 Comic

Far Side, October 18, 1988, residents scribbling on the walls of 'the old cartoonists' home'

While getting older has its downsides, an upside is that being older typically allows for more time to engage in one's ions and interests. Some people, after they retire, get heavily into art, like drawing or painting. For those who have been artists their whole life, like cartoonists, their ion continues into old age. In fact, the ion continues in a way it probably should not in The Far Side.

At the old folks' home specifically for cartoonists, the older people spend their days doodling on the walls of the facility. They draw their fellow residents, with grudges becoming caricatures and insults. Jabs at fellow cartoonists' abilities end up on the wall, with one person writing that Bob can't draw feet (the ability to draw feet is actually very difficult to accomplish, with the "can't draw feet" joke especially funny for those who are also cartoonists and illustrators.)

7 "Now Take Them Big Birds, Barnaby"

FAR SIDE COMIC OF OLD MEN VS VULTURES

Two older men sit on a park bench feeding the birds when one of them points out that the big birds never eat any of the bird seed they throw, instead just sitting there and staring at them. What the man fails to realize is that those big birds are vultures.

The fact that those vultures are staring at the two men is not a good sign because it signals a near end for the men. Since vultures are scavengers, that means that they feed on the remains of dead animals, which includes humans, with the two men oblivious to this fact of nature. While a fun part of getting older is getting to slow down and feed the birds, The Far Side shows that isn't always a good thing.

6 "A Nose That Must Have Been THIS Big"

Far Side's May 24, 1988 Comic

Far Side, May 24, 1988, cartoonists sit on rocking chairs and argue on the porch of 'the old cartoonist's home'

Sitting out on the porch of the old cartoonists' home, three men talk about their illustrated accomplishments, including one of the men who once drew a very long nose. Trying to best his other cartoonist residents, the man in the center is likely embellishing just how big the nose he drew actually was to draw some oohhs and ahhs from his peers. Sharing past accomplishments with peers is a perk of getting older, with people able to reflect on their triumphs and share them with others. Of course, that can easily snowball into bragging like the man in The Far Side comic does.

Larson is obviously playing on the idea of fishing accomplishments here - most older guys would be bragging about the size of their greatest catch, but for old cartoonists, different things are considered impressive.

5 "On Your Mark"

Far Side's April 1, 1983 Comic

far side old man eating contest

With a cast of characters that are older people, a woman gets ready to shoot her starting gun for a two-man eating contest that will settle the long debate about who is the faster eater. A good thing about getting older is that you can get away with a lot more - including silly or even petty obsessions like a speed-eating competition. The Far Side loves to put unexpected characters or settings into its comics, with the two men being unlikely speed eating competitors. Likewise, the addition of the starting gun being used just for a household eating competition adds another layer of silliness and surrealism.

4 "Pop!"

Far Side's February 16, 1981 Comic

far side comic where an old man pops a child's balloon

A great aspect of getting older is caring less about what people think and feeling free to do whatever they want. However, The Far Side, as it tends to do, puts a cynical spin on this usually positive part of accumulating years. A grumpy older man is being pushed in his wheelchair when he decides to undertake a little mischief. While the man may be having some fun, the little kid's day has definitely taken a turn. Some people get their kicks from messing with others, something the man in the strip seems to have never grown out of. The kid with the balloon seems a little more mature than the grown man in the wheelchair.

Larson may like to explore the fun points of getting old, but he also has a lot of affection for exploring the adventures of grumpy old men in The Far Side. Open the image gallery below for more Far Side comics starring grumpy old men.

3 "He's Doing It!"

Far Side's April 10, 1986 Comic

Far Side, pet goldfish doing trick

Spending more time with pets can be a welcome part of getting older. If someone is fortunate enough to be able to retire, they can even take the extra free time on their hands to teach their beloved animal some tricks. In The Far Side, a man has decided to take advantage of his twilight years to teach some amazing feats to his pet goldfish. An older man has his goldfish do the amazing trick of jumping out of the water in the fishbowl and onto his finger - a trick that would be genuinely impressive in the real world.

2 "I Don't Brake"

Far Side's January 26, 1981 Comic

Far Side, January 26, 1981, a man's bumper sticker on his car says 'I don't break'

An older man drives along the road with one very telling bumper sticker that says "I don't brake." After a lifetime following the rules, some older people decide it's long past time they had to care what anyone else thinks. While some people in the real world may proudly stick "I don't brake for jaywalkers" on their car, this Far Side character has gone one further, warning other drivers that he won't be stopping under any circumstances, no matter what the consequences.
