The Boys has quickly grown into one of the most interesting and engrossing shows around, with most people probably subscribing to Amazon Prime just so they could watch this show with ease. It's easy to see why this is the case — after all, the fact of the matter is that the premise of The Boys and the execution of its concept is so excellent that it would be hard not to fall in love with this addictive series.
the most intriguing part of The Boys. That being said, there are still many things that most people don't know about Hughie, regardless of how much screen time he might've received over the course of the series.
In The Comics, Hughie's Parents Are Married And Living Happily In Scotland
In the show, Hughie is shown to be living with his dad, with nary a peep from his mom. However, this couldn't be further from the comics, where Hughie's parents are happily married and living in Scotland.
Speaking of which, bonus fact — Hughie is Scottish in the comics, while he's an American in the show.
He's Not Really A Big Superhero Nerd In The Comics
The show presents Hughie as this run-of-the-mill person who's perhaps the most cliched character ever. He has an unremarkable job, loves superheroes & rock music, and has a great relationship with his girlfriend.
However, in the comics, Hughie isn't a fan of superheroes at all. In fact, he's not even all that aware of the existence of superheroes... that is, until one kills his girlfriend in the most brutal manner possible.
His Love For Anything And Everything Rock Is Quite Obvious
One thing that is quite strongly portrayed in the series is Hughie's unabashed love for anything remotely rock'n'roll — something that the entire show seems to resonate as well.
From openly declaring his love for artists like Van Halen and Billy Joel to rocking the shirts of Nirvana, AC/DC, and Fleetwood Mac — it's pretty clear that Hughie is a music nut.
An Idea Was Pitched To Reshoot The Video For Billy Joel's "You're Only Human" Video With Hughie
In fact, Hughie's love for music was seemingly so intense that Eric Kripke, the creator of The Boys, even went so far as to pitch the concept for a reshoot of "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" from Billy Joel, but with Hughie in the lead role instead.
However, due to the budgetary constraints of the show, this idea ultimately had to be scrapped.
The Line Where He Compares Himself To Katniss Is A Nod To Jack Quaid's Role In The Hunger Games
Jack Quaid plays the role of Hughie in The Boys... and he also plays the role of Marvel in the first Hunger Games movie as well.
So, when he comically compares himself to "that girl" from The Hunger Games, it's a nice nod to the actor's previous role that most fans might not have realized.
His PTSD Has Been Quelled By Starlight's Presence Somewhat
After Robin died in his arms and Translucent was murdered by him, it was clear that Hughie's mental state had deteriorated to quite an extent. Lesser men would've given in to their demons and done something truly tragic.
Thankfully, meandering nature of their relationship in Season 2, one can't deny that their chemistry is quite evident.
Hughie's The Character Who Represents The Audience's POV
Most shows tend to follow a system where one person is a newcomer or unfamiliar with the events and surroundings around him, allowing him to serve as an excuse to educate the audience about what's happening as well.
The Boys follows this trope with the inclusion of Hughie, who represents the audience's POV on what's happening. It's very much likely that the audience has as much knowledge as Hughie about the show's world and the happenings in it.
His Mood Can Shift At The Drop Of A Hat
However mild-mannered and unthreatening Hughie might seem at first glance, there are times when his mood can shift almost instantaneously if he's put in a tight spot.
The best example in this regard has to be when Translucent pretty much demeans him and tells him to move out of his way. This behavior triggers something in Hughie, who decides to show Translucent his place... by blasting him wide apart! Speaking of which....
He's The Only Member Of The Boys Who Has Killed A Member Of The Seven
While this might be a pretty obvious statement at first glance, it's still quite odd to say that the only member of The Boys who's taken the definitive step and killed one of the of The Seven... is Hughie.
It's this murder that finally establishes himself as a permanent member of The Boys, whether he would like it or not. After all, Billy Butcher doesn't appreciate being told no, after all.
He Resembles Butcher's Deceased Younger Brother
Speaking of Butcher, it must be said that his relationship with Hughie can prove to be somewhat complicated at times, leading viewers to wonder what exactly governs his reactions whenever Hughie is involved in the mix.
Well, an answer to this is revealed in Season 2, when Butcher's aunt tells Hughie that he looks just like Lenny, Butcher's younger brother. No wonder they both have such a weird pseudo-sibling relationship going on.
