This article contains spoilers from The Boys season 4.
Summary
- Jeffrey Dean Morgan says that Kessler's return in The Boys season 5 is crucial for Butcher's storyline.
- Kessler embodies the darkest parts of Butcher, driving him further into darkness.
- Kessler's presence is key to Butcher's redemption arc in the final season.
massive plot twist revealed the truth about Kessler being a hallucination of Butcher's, with the real Kessler having died years ago, and this version essentially being the devil on Butcher's shoulder.
In an interview with Variety, Morgan was asked whether he expects Kessler to return for The Boys season 5, which is confirmed to be the final season of the popular Prime Video series. With Jensen Ackles playing Soldier Boy and Jim Beaver playing President-elect Robert Singer, Morgan was also asked if there was a possibility of sharing scenes with them, as all three actors previously appeared in Supernatural. Check out Morgan's response below:
I don’t know how you do Season 5 without an appearance, at least. That’s my feeling. I’ve never had any official talks about it, but I think it’d be really hard to carry on without some sort of resolution — and hopefully that’ll be a whole season!
I want to have scenes with everyone that’s part of that show, but I obviously have a long-standing relationship with Jensen, especially. He’s like my brother. And then Jim is one of the coolest people in the world — so yeah, of course.
Jensen’s Soldier Boy was one of the single greatest characters I’ve seen in television in a long, long time. His performance blew me away. I did want to work with him — and we also have a really good time together, the two of us, especially. And, obviously, that was a carrot in front of my face that I was chasing after, sure.
Why Kessler Should Return In The Boys Season 5
He Is Integral To Butcher's Story
With Kessler being in the backseat of Butcher's car as he drove away, the devil on Butcher's shoulder is still in control.
As Morgan indicated, Kessler's story and his impact on Butcher were not fully resolved by the end of The Boys season 4, making his return necessary for season 5. In the seasons 2 and 3 finales, Butcher ultimately did the right thing, but largely thanks to Kessler's influence in season 4, he did the wrong deed by choosing to kill Victoria Neuman. With Kessler being in the backseat of Butcher's car as he drove away, the devil on Butcher's shoulder is still in control.

Billy Butcher's Supe Powers In The Boys Explained
After hinting at it for all of season 4, The Boys finally confirms that Butcher is a Supe — but what are his powers, and what do they mean for him?
In season 5, Kessler will likely continue to push Butcher down a darker path as he justifies increasingly destructive and immoral actions. Butcher will not be able to redeem himself and honor the promise he made to Becca (Shantel VanSanten) until he can overcome Kessler, who is a manifestation of the worst parts of himself. Without Kessler returning and essentially defeating him, Butcher's arc cannot come to a satisfying conclusion in The Boys season 5.
As for Kessler sharing a scene with Soldier Boy or Singer, that will be more difficult since Kessler is a hallucination of Butcher's. Kessler could appear in a scene with those characters and tell Butcher what to do or what to say, but without an unexpected twist, only Butcher would be able to see them. Even if Kessler does not have a scene with Soldier Boy or Singer, there is still plenty of reason to bring him back for the sake of Butcher's story in The Boys' final season.
