WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for That '90s Show season 1, episode 3!That ‘70s Show. Jackie Burkhart (Mila Kunis) had off-and-on relationships with Michael Kelso (Ashton Kutcher) and Steven Hyde throughout the majority of That ‘70s Show, but in the final season, she ended up with Fez (Wilmer Valderrama). Fez and Jackie were still together when That ‘70s Show’s series finale flipped over to New Year’s Day 1980, which is why it was so surprising that she was revealed to be married to a different character in That ‘90s Show.

Ahead of the series premiere, That ‘90s Show teased that Jackie is married to Michael Kelso in the spinoff. Not only are they married, but they also have a teenage son named Jay Kelso who begins a romantic relationship with Eric and Donna’s daughter Leia. Seemingly undoing the personal progress that Jackie had made in That ‘70s Show season 8, her quick breakup with Fez didn’t seem to make much sense, with Mila Kunis stating as much in an interview with Access Hollywood. While Jackie and Kelso’s romance remains as complicated as ever in That ‘90s Show, Fez finally fills in the blanks about why he and Jackie broke up after That ‘70s Show’s finale.

Jackie Broke Up With Fez Shortly After That '70s Show

When Kitty goes to Fez's hair salon in That ‘90s Show season 1, episode 3, she asks Fez about what happened to his relationship with Jackie 15 years ago. Fez confirms that Jackie suddenly broke up with him when they were on vacation at a hedonism resort in Jamaica. Shortly after That ‘70s Show’s ending, Fez caught Jackie on the phone with Kelso, with Jackie then heading back to Wisconsin to be with him. Fez states that he stayed in Jamaica for five more days after Jackie dumped him, though he seems to have bounced back quickly to become a local celebrity for his hair salon.

While it didn’t seem like Jackie and Fez would have stayed together forever, it is shocking that they broke up immediately after That ‘70s Show’s finale. In fact, the timeline for their breakup doesn’t make sense. In That ‘90s Show, Jackie and Kelso’s son Jay can drive, suggesting he’s about 16 years old in 1995. This would mean that Jay was born in 1979, so That ‘90s Show is certainly continuing That ‘70s Show’s notably messy timeline. It seems That ‘90s Show decided to have Jackie marry Kelso instead of Fez in order to connect to Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s real-life marriage and children, though their characters having a teenage son still makes little sense.

Why Jackie's Relationship With Kelso Is Still Complicated

Ashton Kutcher and Milk Kunis in That 90s Show

Jackie and Kelso may be married in That ‘90s Show, but their relationship has been anything but simple and stable. When That ‘70s Show’s returning characters cameo in the spinoff's season 1 premiere, they explain that they’re getting re-married. In fact, this is their second re-marriage, revealing they have been divorced twice and married three times over the past 15 years. That ‘90s Show also reveals that they still bicker as much as they did as teenagers in That ‘70s Show, so yet another divorce and re-marriage could be in the cards.

The couple’s son adds another layer of complexity to Jackie and Kelso’s relationship in That ‘90s Show. It’s confirmed that the pair have been raising a son together for the past 16 years, but That ‘90s Show doesn’t reveal if they had more children after Jay. Additionally, Michael doesn’t mention his daughter Betsy Kelso, who was born in That ‘70s Show season 7. Since That ‘90s Show’s Jay also makes no mention of his older half-sister, it’s unclear if the Kelso family still has frequent with her.
