Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Prepon details recreating the original intro for the revival series. The classic intro features the main cast riding in the Vista Cruiser and singing along to Cheap Trick performing "In the Street." Minus season 8, which changed the format of the intro, Prepon's Donna puts her hands on the dashboard in every incarnation, something that her daughter Leia (Callie Haverda) also does in the new version.

Oh my gosh, that was so awesome. That was totally surreal. And a lot more people had to squish into the Vista Cruiser for this one. It was really fun. The first time they played the song and we were all singing, I just got chills. I'm like, "This is so awesome that they're doing this." And I love that that was written into the show. It just brought me right back — but now, I'm outside of the car directing the scene, and it just filled my heart.

[Leia] was so cute. And that was a decision that we made. We talked about it and it's like, "Do we want Leia to do that or is that too much? Should she not do that?" Because she's her own person, she's not doing a Donna-ism. But she did it and it was great.

That '90s Show Features Plenty Of Homages To The Original Show

The Revival Has Carved Its Own Path

That '90s Show has leaned into nostalgia for its parent series. Season 1 featured the majority of the main cast returning for cameo appearances throughout its run. The show has also seen multiple key locations, like the Forman's house and the water tower, play into its storytelling. However, the show has forged its own identity.

The lead characters crammed into the Vista Cruiser is made all the better by knowing that Prepon is the director behind it, creating a fond memory of what came before.

While certain parallels can certainly be drawn between the two shows, they are not carbon copies of each other. The new cast of teenagers do not have a one-to-one pairing with the original cast. While returning characters and tropes are welcome in the revival, they are not the driving force behind the show.

One heartwarming callback is recreating the original intro to the show. Although 'That 90s Show features plenty of Easter eggs and cameos, it does not need to look to its past to be a success on streaming, but revisiting certain elements will always be welcome.
