Tesla has unveiled the long-awaited Plaid variant of its Model S, along with a higher-specced Plaid+ variant. The new versions bring updates to the powertrain and design of the Model S, with more power, acceleration, and speed, as well as a refined interior. Tesla says the Model S Plaid+ has the quickest 0-60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration of any production car ever.

The Model S, launched in 2012, is the longest sold of any of Tesla's current models and the Plaid update has been hotly anticipated. The Long-Range variant that was already available is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel drivetrain that develops a maximum of 670 hp, which is not to be sniffed at. It can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and maxes out at 155 mph, all while offering a range of 412 miles.

The Performance variants of the Model S. They are also all-wheel drive, but they are each powered by three motors rather than two, which allows them to kick out a staggering 1,020 hp and 1,1000 hp, respectively. The Plaid will hit 60 mph from a standstill in 1.99 seconds, while the Plaid+ will apparently do so in less than that. Both can apparently reach 200 mph "with the right tires."

It's not just the performance of the Model S that has been overhauled. A new glass roof makes for a brighter interior but is said to block infrared and UV light and help to keep heat and glare down "even when the sun is directly overhead.” An updated 2200×1300 center display provides entertainment and gaming functionality and is coupled with a 22-speaker, 960-watt audio system, while a third display has been added in the rear to keep back-seat engers entertained.

Elsewhere, there's a rectangular steering 'yoke' as opposed to a traditional steering wheel and 'tri-zone climate controls' allows the cabin to be variously conditioned to the preferences of those inside the vehicle without using traditional physical vents. Other features — some new, some that Tesla already offers elsewhere — include a HEPA air filtration system, smartphone key vehicle access, location-aware automatic garage door opening, and wireless and USB-C fast charging for every enger. Unsurprisingly, this all comes at a hefty cost, with the Plaid variant starting at $112,990 and the Plaid+ at $132,990, which is not far off double the $72,990 starting price of the existing Long-Range variant.
