In the latest entry of our ongoing series, Screen Rant's Ryan George reveals what (probably) happened in the Terminator: Dark Fate. The sixth entry in the series, Dark Fate attempts to shake off franchise fatigue by ignoring everything from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines onwards and positioning itself as the new and better sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
The first step in starting over fresh is, naturally, killing John Connor, which is achieved via a CG recreation of Edward Furlong. After John gets blown away by a Terminator in the movie's opening few minutes, the action skips forward to the present day. The bad future with Skynet killing billions of people and taking over the world has been prevented, but has been replaced with an equally bad future where another weaponized AI called Legion kills billions of people and takes over the world. Legion has sent back a Terminator to kill a human who will be crucial to the future resistance, and in turn the humans have sent back a soldier called Grace to protect the target.
If that all sounds strangely familiar, it's because Terminator: Dark Fate frequently dips back into the ink of the first two Terminator movies - using everything from the unkillable catchphrase "I'll be back" to another chase with the Terminator driving an enormous truck. It even borrows a climactic Terminator kill scene from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Check out the pitch meeting for Terminator: Dark Fate below.
Even with James Cameron back onboard as a producer, Terminator: Dark Fate hasn't revitalized the franchise the way it was intended to. Deadpool, but based on the evidence so far it seems that no one can direct a Terminator movie quite like Cameron himself.
Unfortunately for Terminator fans, Avatar, the first of which is supposed to release in 2021. Depending on how many more Avatar movies Cameron ends up making, the real robo-apocalypse may come around before he gets back to making another Terminator movie.
