HBO Max has debuted the first teaser trailer for Mark Ruffalo's new crime drama, Task, and provided a release window. The TV series comes from Brad Ingelsby, the creator of HBO's hit 2021 miniseries Mare of Easttown, which starred Kate Winslet as the central detective. Now, Task is taking a similar crime-drama angle, with Ruffalo stepping in to play the head of an FBI task force.

The Task teaser trailer was posted today on the official YouTube channel for Max, providing a look at Ruffalo in action as the down-and-out Tom Bradis. The clip sees Ruffalo's character called back to the field to lead a group of under-experienced agents, played by Alison Oliver, Fabien Frankel, and Thuso Mbedu, to put an end to a string of home invasions. The culprits? A group of villains led by Tom Pelphrey's Robbie Prendergrast. Task's teaser trailer's ending also reveals that the series will debut on the newly redubbed HBO Max in September 2025. What The Task Trailer Means For The Series

What The Teaser Reveals About Ruffalo's HBO Max Show

The Task trailer is our first in-depth look at the series. Previously, Max released a handful of first-look images, introducing potential audiences to Ruffalo's character. Additionally, the images showed Pelphrey's Robbie Prendergrast with his family, emphasizing the juxtaposition of his character's villain status. Now, the trailer for Task has really delved into the dynamic within these characters' lives. The clips jump back and forth between focusing on Ruffalo and Pelphrey, creating contrast between their home and professional lives.

Mark Ruffalo's New Crime Show Must Capitalize On Its Mare Of Easttown Connection

Mark Ruffalo is set to star in a new crime television show on HBO, and the miniseries has ties to Kate Winslet's Mare of Easttown.

In many ways, the trailer for Task demonstrates how run-of-the-mill the series will be for a crime drama. The idea of a veteran returning to work to lead a group of inexperienced rookies is classic. However, the trailer implies that the differences between Ruffalo and Pelphrey's characters will be what makes Task stand out. This isn't a straightforward hero versus villain story. The light and dark in both are evident throughout Task's teaser.

Our Take On Task's Trailer

Task Is Shaping Up To Be A Great Next Step After Mare Of Easttown

Pelphrey in HBO's Task (1)

One of the more pressing questions surrounding Task has been how it will cMare of Easttown. While we would like to see Ingelsby produce something similarly gripping, there's no point if the new series doesn't present something fresh. The trailer for Task matches the tone of Ingelsby's previous hit, and the implication of the lead character's background is rather similar. Additionally, it looks like this will be another character-driven crime drama, which is undoubtedly good news.

What has me the most excited about Task is that intriguing contrast between Ruffalo and Pelphrey's characters. The FBI agent seems to be failing his family, while the home invader is a clear family man. It really puts a twist on what we expect from heroes and villains in these types of series. Ingelsby seems to have combined the excellent character work of Mare of Easttown with something wholly unique. To make matters all the better, we only have a few months to wait before Task's September 2025 premiere.
