  • I don't enjoy Thor: Ragnarok as much as others seem to do. It's a solid movie, don't get me wrong, but half of the comedic moments fall flat for me which is a lot considering how much it leans into that. A drastic turn from the first two Thor movies, but I also think it was Hemsworth really coming into the character that lead to an even better appearance in Infinity War.

  • What makes this movie feel so impressive is the drastic tone shift in the franchise, especially coming after Thor: The Dark World. Some of the comedy doesn't hit like it did on a first watch but I think what makes the film still thoroughly enjoyable is how confident everyone feels in their characters. Hemsworth and Ruffalo had great banter throughout the film. Hela is also an extremely effective villain which makes up for the underwhelming villains of the past Thor films.

  • Taika Waititi's instincts mesh perfectly with superhero storytelling, as he uses the well-defined and much-loved character of Thor to ground a wacky space adventure with bite. Thor: Ragnarok is one of those movies that you come out of wanting to create something of your own.

  • 2017's Thor: Ragnarok works because it's SUCH an amazing departure from the MCU's first two Thor films. It's absolutely in my Top 10 favorite MCU films of all time.

Coming from director Taika Waititi, the third Thor movie is infused with some incredible humor and character dynamics for the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) that had never been seen before, while also mixing his status as a Norse god with an intergalactic space opera adventure alongside Bruce Banner's Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and of course his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

There's so much to love about Thor: Ragnarok, including the gladiatorial face-off between Thor and Hulk, the MCU debut of the Goddess of Death Hela (Cate Blanchett), as well as Thor and Loki getting to reconcile ahead of 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.

Although Waititi's next Thor movie Love and Thunder in 2022 arguably took what worked in Ragnarok and took it too far with some controversial results, it doesn't change the fact that Thor: Ragranok was exactly what was needed for the character at the time, setting Thor up perfectly to become one of the most epic heroes in Avengers: Infinity War.

  • While Thor: Ragnarok does a great job of adding some needed levity to the Thor franchise with plenty of great action to accompany it, it has a bad habit of not taking itself seriously enough, and the script becomes rather lackluster as a result. Add in one of the worst MCU villains to date, and Thor: Ragnarok is a film where how much a person likes it depends on how much they can handle Taika Waititi's style.

Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok is a breath of fresh air in the MCU, but still feels very much like a Marvel movie – for better or worse.
