Like many of us out there, I grew up with fantasies of one day possibly being spotted by a boyband member and having him fall in love with me right there. This is practically something out of a fanfiction I might've written about Harry Styles 10 years ago. That being said, it does really appeal to some nostalgic part of you. I'm not 40, I'm still in my 20s, so it's hard for me to say how I feel about the age difference because it is legal, thankfully, and so it's hard to argue with letting two adults just be happy. Would I personally date someone with such an age gap between us, probably not, but I think the hate this movie is receiving purely for that is a little insane. The movie is fun and entertaining and if genders were reversed, we wouldn't even be batting an eye at this, so I don't know why it matters so much here. It's a movie, they're adults, let it be. As far as being an actual romance, I was rooting for them, so I would say it's pretty good.

No. No. Noooo. If anybody in Hollywood with any power is reading this review, please stop making uncomfortable age-gap relationship movies that are meant to be romantic. They are so uncomfortable to watch.

In of how fanfictions-turned-films usually go, The Idea of You is probably one of the best ones. The script actually feels adapted for the film, not just taking the cheesy lines from a fanficition and ing them off as dialogue that people would actually use in real life. August Moon actually feels like a real boy band, and it's pretty neat that they dedicated so much to building up their discography so that they do feel authentic. Both leads were great and really sold their chemistry.
