  • I think this is a perfect first entry for the MCU's Spider-Man, and the decision not to make this a true origin story worked in its benefit. Everyone is already familiar with how Peter Parker gets his powers, so if the MCU's version was just going to be more of the same, then there would've been no point in showing it. Skipping over it meant we could get straight to the character development.

The biggest argument against the MCU's Spider-Man has been that he depends on Tony Stark too much, but I actually think that really works here. Past Spider-Man adaptations have taken place in universes where the heroes aren't as well-known as the ones in the MCU. There's nothing wrong with Peter having a mentor to work with as I still get a great sense of who Holland's Peter is individually.

  • My appreciation for Homecoming has only grown since its release, and that's not to say the other movies are bad, I just feel that this movie is the best way to execute a typical Spidey tale in the MCU without the Avengers/Multiverse baggage. The little corner of Queens it crafts is probably the movie's biggest strength. Peter's friends and family are expertly handled, blending his ordinary life with the surrounding MCU, while Holland immediately leaves a mark as Peter. Keaton's Vulture is also fantastic, there's the sympathetic element, but he is also very menacing for one of the more mortal MCU villains. All this comes together for a really strong Spider-Man movie

  • Spider-Man is one of the most beloved superheroes of all time, but he's also already had so many movies and stories that it felt like we didn't need another one. That feeling was wrong. We absolutely did. Tom Holland is perfect as both Peter Parker and his Spider-Man persona. It's good that this movie wasn't an origin story, and it's also good that his first major villain wasn't one audiences had already seen a million times. The MCU version of Spider-Man is really able to stand out as a result.

  • A great MCU entry that shows how much casting can change a project. A first-entry Spidey movie where he fights Vulture sounds like nothing on paper, but the film makes smart choice after smart choice, turning this into one of the best Spider-Man movies, full stop.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Review
8/10

Spider-Man: Homecoming works as both a (very) funny high school comedy/drama and strong standalone superhero movie set in the MCU.
