  • Riverdale is campy in the best way possible. Don't go into this show expecting it to be remotely realistic or wholesome. The characters, style, and plot are overexaggerated for humor, and the writers don't hesitate to throw in the most bizarre narrative elements. Veronica, Betty, Jughead, Archie, and the others are drastically different than in the comics. Set aside your expectations and enjoy the roller coaster ride that is Riverdale.

  • I've never been able to get into Riverdale any of the times I've tried. The acting is bad and unbelievable, the plots are too outlandish to begin to fathom, and it just has never been a show I've enjoyed or been able to watch for very long.

  • Undeniably schlocky and weird, Riverdale nevertheless kept reinventing itself in a way that makes absolutely no sense. Its strength is that it knows that as YA romance/drama/horror it doesn't NEED to make sense as a whole, and so diverts its efforts to being fun in the moment, which it is.

  • So much potential that went off the rails... Nowadays, everyone loves a new, gritty reboot of an old classic. As someone who grew up on Archie Comics, picking up a new "Betty and Veronica" or "Sabrina" from the checkout line at the grocery store was a regular occurrence. I was incredibly excited to hear Riverdale was releasing, to see how they handled old characters with a new twist. The first season was alright, though with several extreme deviations from the source material, such as "Ms Grundy" now being a young, attractive teacher. The drama was high, but expected, with several plot twists and insinuations of deeper, darker secrets. Unfortunately, after the first season, they lost the plot. Netflix is unfortunately notorious for planning out only a season or two for a new show, then needing to "wing it" to keep going. Riverdale is no different. Very quickly, plots of subterfuge, gangs, and even supernatural influences find their way into the show. While somewhat enjoyable at first, it quickly becomes unbelievable (not in a good way) and just keeps trying to top its last hilltop of "extreme plot twist."

  • I really liked the idea that Riverdale presented for its first season: an adaptation of the Archie comics with the characters at the center of a murder mystery. Unfortunately, that particular idea didn't last very long. The show got further and further from that premise each season. The series has to be commended for finding a way to completely change the game every year though, from cults to magic to time travel, the outlandish storylines really knew no bounds.
