  • Nightcrawler is a near-perfect psychological thriller and is up there with Gyllenhaal's all-time best perfomances. Jake is great at playing the typical hero or cool guy protagonist, but his ability to play seemingly level-headed characters with a slightly dangerous edge is something I've loved about him since his Donnie Darko days. Even in Presumed Innocent Gyllenhaal keeps you on your toes which is where I think he truly shines as an actor.

I was not expecting Nightcrawler to be as good as it ended up being. What I love about it most is how at its core it's just a simple story told very very well. The plot falls into place so naturally that there are never any narrative obstacles or bumps in the road that distract you. The mostly LA at-night setting is intoxicating as well and adds a palpable level of eeriness that pairs so well with the character and the industry he works in. It also has a great message that points to the moral pitfalls of an industry that profits off of disaster and tragedy. Outstanding movie.

  • I think Nightcrawler is extremely underrated! It's sufficiently intense, showcasing a terrifying drive from it's main character. It got a lot of press when it came out, but has not really stayed as relevant, though it really should, because it holds up and it is fantastic.

Synopsis

Written and directed by Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler follows petty thief Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) after he learns of a potentially lucrative job opportunity selling footage of violent events to local media outlets. Lou becomes a "stringer" - a freelance journalist who captures and records footage for news stations - and finds that the profession sucks him into the most dangerous parts of Los Angeles. Drawn deeper into his dark obsession, Lou becomes increasingly fixated with violence and crime.
