  • Forgettable fluff with a game Ryan Reynolds. It IS kind of fun to see a story play out in the world of Pokemon that isn't just a 'trainer makes it big' tale, and there are a lot of small details that make the setting come alive.

  • Unfortunately, I chose to watch this movie in the hospital right before I went into labor, so it has a very weird spot in my memory, but I loved it. I wasn't sure how I was gonna feel about a live-action Pokemon movie, but Justice Smith was the perfect casting for this and Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu was *chef's kiss*. It had all the charm and suspense you feel when playing through a pokemon game or even watching the anime, which is quite an impressive feat. The story is not "original" per se, but it was amazing nonetheless.

  • I love Pokemon so much that even Ryan Reynolds can't drag this one down for me. Think the live-action designed are perfectly adapted for the medium. If they kept the look of this movie, but actually had a better story than Detective Pikachu, it could be one of my favorite movies of all time.

  • Despite being super predictable, Detective Pikachu is still a lot of fun. It delivers on some great action sequences - the Pokemon battles are truly amazing. There is nothing like seeing your favorite Pokemon come to life on screen.

  • While Detective Pikachu doesn't have the tightest script and has all the typical cliches of a buddy comedy where a human character is teamed up with a talking animal, the film still does an amazing job of bringing tons of Pokemon to life in a story with plenty of heart and charm. It wasn't the best adaptation Pokemon could have hoped for, but it's a film that's plenty fun to watch, nonetheless, and fans of the franchise are sure to be satisfied with what they see.

Detective Pikachu is wholesome, silly fun, with solid world-building and stunning CGI Pokémon that are complemented well enough by its story.
