  • As much as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory might be divisive for how different it is from the original classic film, it does a great job of forging its own identity through striking visuals and a unique take on the original story for a much more engaging narrative. It's not necessarily better or worse than the original film, but old and new fans alike are sure to like it so long as they're willing to give it a fair chance.

  • Johnny Depp couldn't live up to the incredible legacy of Gene Wilder. All the characters are rather lackluster and one-dimensional. The CGI visuals also look kitschy instead of impressive.

  • It's one of my favourite movies honestly and I'm very critical about these things (my other favourite movies include Whiplash, No Country For Old Men, Misery , The Shining, Corpse Bride...) . It's not as creepy as the original (which is not a very good thing) but it is extremely funny and relatable in some sort of way. The characters are really heart warming at some points and I like that the main focus is shifting between Charlie and Willy Wonka's contrasting life styles and beliefs. But honestly, no matter how much I love Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, I have to it that the characters fall flat at certain points. It's definitely a movie for a "fun watch", not award winning or anything. It could be considered for me a comfort movie which is why I like it so much. It reminds me of some very good times.

  • While Dahl's writing and Burton's style do fit well together, this film still has its issues in the character department. Charlie is reduced to an overtly-godly figure lacking the temptations that made him feel like an actual kid, while Wonka's aloofness being sumarised due to Childhood trauma does rb the character of his mystique. Nevertheless, this movie is a fair retelling of a familiar story, even if it lacks character.

  • This version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a fun one with vibrant visuals and jaw-dropping set design. Johnny Depp is a wonderful Willy Wonka, but not quite as perfect for the role as Gene Wilder in the original version.
