Warning! Spoilers ahead for SWAT season 8, episode 20.
As SWAT season 8, episode 20 reminded us of the growth that he has been through.
Since CBS keeps looking for ways to create franchises, one option would be to continue the universe of SWAT. With the most recent episode showing Tan in a brighter light, it offered the perfect spinoff idea, especially considering the position he has within the team now, as the trainer in the Academy. It’s time for Tan to get a chance to shine and give the series a chance to show a different group of SWAT officers, such as those who are just training.
SWAT Season 8, Episode 20 Shows How Much Tan Has Grown
Victor Tan Is No Longer The Man To Get Into Fights
It takes time for people to learn how to control their anger, and Tan had to do that throughout SWAT’s eight-season run. He tried to do his best, but after finding out that his wife was cheating on him, he allowed himself to get in a bit of a hole. During SWAT season 8, episode 20, we were reminded of the time Tan went to a bar and got into a fight.

Since Nichelle Isn't Coming Back, These 5 Other Characters Needs To Return For The S.W.A.T. Finale
The S.W.A.T. series finale will be here before we know it, and here are five characters from throughout the series who need to make a cameo.
This fight almost cost him his career, but in the end, he was suspended for a few weeks and was then allowed to come back. He is a long way from that character now, sharing his advice with Miko (Niko Pepaj), who he didn't even initially like or respect, when he saw something similar happening there. Tan quickly found ways to step in to prevent Miko from doing something he would later regret, allowing Miko to end the final season of SWAT in a positive light.
A Tan Academy Prequel Spinoff Is A Great Way To Continue The SWAT Franchise
Seeing More Of How Tan Developed Would Be An Excellent Spinoff
SWAT could opt for a prequel series, which is the way many franchises are growing, especially with CBS having NCIS: Origins and Young Sheldon, by showing us a time when Tan was in the Academy. We already know that he has grown into an excellent officer, but he didn’t always have a calm head. He also had to face adversity due to the color of his skin, which isn’t something the series has focused too much on. Showing some of the reasons why he would fight back to remind us of his growth.
Showing Tan training the newer of SWAT would be a fun way to continue the franchise, as we get to see the need to train out bad habits and hot tempers.
Alternatively, if SWAT season 9 had happened, there could have been a chance to further develop his ability to lead. In season 8, he took over the training of new recruits, which became a storyline for Deacon (Jay Harrington) and Tan, as they showed how different their training styles were. At one point, Deacon had to learn to step back and allow Tan to do things his way. Showing Tan training the newer of SWAT would be a fun way to continue the franchise, as we get to see the need to train out bad habits and hot tempers.
Can A SWAT Spinoff Of Any Kind Happen?
CBS Wants To Build On Franchises But It May Be Too Late
We have seen many franchises develop on CBS. NCIS and FBI are the two biggest, but CBS attempted to develop The Equalizer and is now working on developing the Blue Bloods and Fire Country universes. This opens the door to a SWAT franchise, and it doesn’t matter that the series is coming to an end. Blue Bloods ended before the Boston Blue spinoff was announced, and Donnie Wahlberg fans are ready for fall 2025.

I'm Worried That S.W.A.T. Will End Without Delivering On Its Biggest Promise
A lot of pressure has been placed on S.W.A.T.'s series finale, and I am worried that their sweetest storyline will be ignored indefinitely.
The problem for a SWAT franchise is that the original series wasn’t produced in-house. It is a Sony TV-produced series, and that means it’s licensed by CBS, which caused financial issues for it. A spinoff would also need to remain with Sony TV, leading to further financial negotiations. Had things worked out favorably for SWAT season 9, then maybe a spinoff could have been in the works, but realistically, it’s unlikely to happen. There is an idea available should CBS and Sony want to forces again, though.
