Survivor 48's disappointing end, they're demanding a return to form as soon as possible. Throughout Survivor history, there have been some things that viewers are okay with changing, and some things they're desperate to keep the same. The live reading of the votes and reunion was a feature in the first 39 seasons of the series, but in the new era, that fell to the wayside and left viewers irritated with a pre-taped lesser version.

According to Reddit u/Stommped, many are hopeful this is "the death of the aftershow on the island." While many fans understand that it will be around for Survivor 49, they're hopeful that Survivor 50 will end the immediate, pre-taped reunion. "I think this season in particular really is one of the worst in the new era to not have had...contestants getting a chance to see the edited version," the Reddit shared. The series used to bring castaways back together after the show had aired to discuss everything they'd seen, and the new era isn't delivering the same drama.

What After Show Backlash Means For Survivor

Viewers Miss The Old Reunion Format

Since the beginning of Survivor's run, there have been a few things that have been the same, including the aftershow/reunion taking place live. After the final tribal council, the jury used to vote and Survivor host Jeff would then get the votes, but wouldn't read them. Instead, the cast would have to wait for months until the show finished airing, and Jeff would read the final vote live on a sound stage in front of an audience before getting into the aftershow, which would feature the cast from the entire season. This was the preferred format for longtime Survivor fans.

Viewers enjoyed the format far more than the current aftershow, which is taped on site in Fiji directly after the votes are read, because it allows for some more reflection from the cast. In the old format, the castaways would've had the opportunity to watch the show back and make more informed considerations about their own performances, as well as the rest of the cast's. While Survivor seems to enjoy the new format because it's an easier and likely cheaper aftershow, the live reunion format was a better fit for viewers and the cast in general, giving them more space.

Our Take On Survivor’s After Show Vs. Live Reunion

The Live Reunion Was Always Superior

Although there are some who enjoy the current state of the aftershow because it neatly fits into 30 minutes at the end of a three-hour episode, it's nowhere near as exploratory as the live reunion episode. With the live reunion including the full cast, building anticipation for the winner and then seeing that reaction, and allowing for a larger sense of introspection after the season has aired, it offers more to the viewers as a whole. Despite knowing that the live reunion is probably more costly, Survivor viewers far prefer it and hope to see it back for good soon.
