Fans are happy that a brand-new set of Survivor castaways, all of whom are eager to outwit, outplay, and outlast each other. With each new installment of the show, the strategy needed to win evolves. Competitors from season 42 will have to bring something new to the table in order to boost the odds of becoming the Sole Survivor. In Daniel's case, perhaps the winning strategy is simply getting fellow castaways to overlook the fact that he has many of the same attributes as previous winners.
Daniel Strunk is a 30-year-old Law Clerk from Cincinnati. He has already won a battle with cancer and he is excited to make the most out of his Survivor opportunity. During a pre-show interview with CBS, he shared that he is extremely mindful of his perceived threat level, in of gameplay. He wants to model his threat management after Survivor: Nicaragua winner Jud "Fabio" Birza. While he isn't the only player this season taking cues from past Survivor players, he certainly seems to be the most mindful of the characteristics that he shared with previous winners. He believes that his success hinges on other players overlooking this.
As Strunk explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "I will win Survivor because I somehow miraculously in the Doctor Strange one out of 14 billion universes convinced these people to look beyond the fact I fit the archetype of several past schemers, fit the archetype of several past winners, and am a cancer survivor, so I have a sob story," he says. "It's even worse because my sob story involves Survivor itself because watching Survivor helped me get through the cancer — so it's not just a sob story, it's a sob story that fits into the arc of winning the show."
Despite the fact that Strunk isn't the only Doctor Strange level magic allows him to save his story for the final tribal council, his personal battle paired with his cunning may be enough to leverage a victory. Survivor is a game all about hiding your threat level for the right moment. Many winners have won by waiting to show their true color until the end. Either way, we will know soon enough if Daniel Strunk can pull off such a feat.
Survivor season 42 premieres March 9 on CBS.
