In the have been seen dying on a regular basis. However, there have been certain characters that we feel would have benefited from remaining alive longer than they had.

Due to their potential and storylines they would have shined in, these characters’ deaths were ill-timed by the show, and ultimately their being written out was a real shame. Now that Supernatural is about to end and there’s no going back, it’s time to check out these 10 characters who were killed off much sooner that they needed to be.

Death

Although he forms part of Dean Winchester’s coolest kills, there’s no doubt the fandom regrets the fact that the character was killed off just when the Darkness was released. Plus, the prospect of seeing him go up against God now that he’s been revealed as the ultimate Big Bad has unfortunately also been taken away.

If nothing else, we miss seeing him munch down junk food and make it look both delicious and badass, as well as Death rounding things out by throwing in a well timed sarcastic jab or two at the Winchesters.

Gadreel

Gadreel shows off his wings after posessing Sam in Supernatural

There was potential in making Gadreel out to be the next Castiel, but the character took his own life in the only season we saw him. He had a similar route that Castiel took, as Gadreel saved the life of Sam, turned out to be swayed by a faulty cause, and then tried to make amends.

Rather than having him be written out, Supernatural could have made him a back-up angel they turned to for help and have Gadreel take a storyline where he redeemed himself from the faults of his past.

Benny Lafitte

Bennie from Supernatural

He was recently brought back for a small appearance due to Jensen Ackles feeling that Benny was a solid character and a fan favorite, and we agree with this decision, as Benny’s final hurrah left more to be desired.

Nothing really came out of him escaping Purgatory and being on Earth, and Benny was lazily killed off by having him return to Purgatory to retrieve Sam and fight some other vampires. We would’ve liked to have seen him befriend Sam as well, and become a valuable ally like Arthur Ketch did.

Kevin Tran

He was given a relatively expanded role in season 8, but Kevin was never separated from the Word of God tablets storyline, as he was killed off the moment that narrative angle was finished with. But we think it would’ve worked had Supernatural shown Kevin to become a hunter himself, and his death still stings us.

It wasn’t done all that well either, considering Gadreel eventually had a change of heart and God turned out to be a real jerk by sending Kevin’s soul to Hell rather than Heaven just for laughs. Not only was Kevin killed soon, he wasn’t given a fair ending either.

Balthazar

Balthazar attempts to kill the angel of fate in Supernatural

It’s a total shame how Supernatural didn’t opt to have Balthazar become the angel version of Crowley, because that’s exactly how fans saw him, and they grew to love his character. Being a subversion of the usual monotone angel trope, Balthazar had gallons of style and charisma.

This made his death at the end of season 6 - the only season he was seen in - all the more difficult to watch, as Castiel killed him just when Balthazar had become the kind of good guy who would’ve made for an awesome recurring character.

Gordon Walker

Gordon Walker talks to a shadowy figure in Supernatural.

There have been multiple antagonists who turned into allies for the Winchesters over the years, and we see no reason why Gordon couldn’t have taken the same route too. After all, he had an interesting dynamic with both Winchesters, meaning there was enough to keep him relevant for years.

And yet, the show had him go insane, as his turn into a vampire led Gordon to swear off his own code and go on a murderous rampage before meeting his death at the hands of Sam. His four episodes did not do this character justice.

Charlie Bradbury

Once responsible for making the kind of jokes Supernatural fans love, Charlie’s death hit us hard due to it being the result of the Winchesters attempting to remove the Mark of Cain, meaning they were ultimately responsible for it.

It came at a time when Charlie had transitioned into being a recurring ally rather than being restricted to guest appearances, so we didn’t get to see her fulfill her potential as the “sister I never wanted,” as put by Dean. We saw how Rowena became such a prominent female character in a show dominated by men, and Charlie could’ve easily done the same.

Bobby Singer

Jim Beaver as Bobby

Yes, he lasted a heck of a lot longer than 95% of the ing characters on the show, but we’re considering the fact that it’s been almost a decade since Bobby died, meaning he only appeared in less than half of the show’s run.

Castiel and Crowley fulfilled all their characterization could offer them, so it’s quite unfair that Bobby didn’t get to do the same, especially considering he appeared before the other two characters. There’s been a world of change for the Winchesters since Bobby died, and he deserved to have been there for all the hard times the boys went through.

Eileen Leahy

Considered by many as Supernatural’s attempt at building up the true love interest of Sam Winchester, Eileen was unceremoniously killed off even before there was a canonical scene where she and Sam became romantic.

Being a character who was deaf, Eileen was also perfect to show off empowerment in this regard as she could easily give monsters of all kinds a hard time and still be a total boss in personality. Her death during the weaker seasons of the show meant that we didn’t get to have her when the show’s storylines got stronger and would’ve been better placed to make use of her.

John Winchester

Some crazy fangirls love to hate on this character and call out John Winchester as a horrible father, but that’s because those fans don’t stop to consider how this guy protected his kids from Azazel during their youth and spent over a century in Hell to save Dean from meeting the same fate.

John’s return in Season 14 highlighted how badly his lack of presence had affected the Winchesters, while also putting it in striking notice how out of touch he was with the numerous events that had taken place since his last appearance. We've loved comparing him to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's portrayal of Negan, but it’s a missed opportunity we didn't see more of John and how we never appeared alongside the likes of Bobby and Castiel.
