Summary
- The Changeling is a supernatural being that replaces stolen children. They are stronger than humans but can be beaten by fire or by eliminating the Changeling mother.
- Ghosts and poltergeists are different types of supernatural entities. Ghosts are spirits of the deceased while poltergeists want attention and can be dangerous. A special ritual or salting is needed to eliminate poltergeists.
- The Rugaru is a tragic supernatural creature that transforms into a monster with animal instincts at the age of 30. It can be defeated with fire or enchanted weapons.
The most powerful Supernatural creatures were part of the overall mythology of the Winchester brothers' battle against angels and demons, Heaven and Hell, with Earth and humans caught in the middle. However, much like The X-Files before it, the show might be the most fun when it takes on the Monster of the Week episodes. Sam and Dean Winchester were hunters, battling all kinds of supernatural monsters and demons to save lives and protect the innocent. The entire premise from the start was that the boys were hunters, and the supernatural creatures they hunted ranged from the classic myths to some really evil and powerful original creations.
Supernatural ended after 15 seasons, with Dean and Sam finishing their mission, Jack overtaking God for the power of Heaven, and many of the most powerful Supernatural monsters falling along the way. However, 2022 also saw a new chapter in Supernatural lore with The Winchesters, a prequel series that showed how Dean and Sam's parents met and became great hunters in their own rights. This re-painted many of the myths fans knew from Supernatural in a new light. However, they rarely matched the memorability of the most powerful Supernatural monsters from the original series.

10 Terrible Supernatural Monsters That Never Returned
Supernatural has a wide roster of monsters of the week, and some of them weren't good enough to come back over the course of the show's 15 season run.
31 Changelings
Season 3, Episode 2
The Changeling is a supernatural being from European mythology. They are monsters that replace a stolen child. In their natural state, they are discolored with hollow eyes and a rounded mouth full of teeth. They look human unless seen through their reflection. The Changeling mother feeds on the stolen babies, while the young Changelings feed on the human mothers. The Changelings appeared in Supernatural in season 3 when a Changeling mother stole children from their homes and replaced them with her own children.
While what happens to the stolen babies is tragic, Changelings are not as powerful as other Supernatural monsters. They are stronger than humans but can be beaten by fire and eliminated by eliminating the Changeling mother. When Sam and Dean killed the mother with a flamethrower, all the children died as well. They never appeared again after season 3.
30 Ghosts / Poltergeists
Recurring Since Season 1
When it comes to , ghosts and poltergeists can get pretty confusing. In many instances, most people lump them together, but there is a difference between the two. Ghosts are the spirits of the deceased who could not move on to Heaven or Hell and are stuck on Earth. They are sometimes good and work to help humans in times of need. Examples of ghosts are former allies like Jo and Bobby in season 7 and Kevin Tan in season 9.
Meanwhile, Poltergeists are extremely dangerous. Ghosts are stuck on Earth and, in many cases, want to move on. Poltergeists demand attention and will do anything to receive it. They are former ghosts who are now more powerful creatures (with abilities like biokinesis, invisibility, telekinesis, and more). It takes a ritual or salting to eliminate them. An example is Maggie Briggs, a witch from the 1700s who torments Sam and Dean in season 5. Sam and Dean salted and burned her remains to defeat her.
29 Crocotta
Season 3, Episode 14
A Crocotta is a dangerous supernatural monster because it can mimic a human's voice. It can use the voices of loved ones to lure victims into traps it has set up. They are based on a mythological monster from India. According to legend, they were animal-like creatures that could mimic human speech and then attack and eat their victims. The Crocottas appeared in Supernatural in season 3 when Sam and Dean investigated murders after people received phone calls from what they called "spirits."
The alteration to these Supernatural monsters is that they developed the ability to use telephones and computers, which makes it easy for them to obtain victims, as they no longer need to hunt. They eat their victims and devour their souls. However, a Hunter can beat them by stabbing them in the back of the neck. The Crocotta in Supernatural was trying to kill Sam when Dean pushed him into a protruding metal spike to kill him.
28 Rugaru
First Appearance - Season 4, Episode 4
The Rugaru is not only a powerful supernatural creature but also has a tragic history. These humans live an everyday life until they reach the age of 30. However, when they turn 30, they morph into monsters with animal instincts that make them hungry. Because of this, they will eat anything — even former loved ones — since they are unable to control themselves.
No Rugaru could avoid their fate no matter how good or virtuous the person was as they all fall victim to the curse on their 30th birthday. Fire is one of the few things that can take a Rugaru down, besides a few enchanted weapons. These Supernatural monsters first appeared in season 4 but have returned several times in later seasons. Their first appearance shows the tragedy, as this person doesn't want to be a Rugaru but can't avoid his fate.
27 Sirens
Season 4, Episode 14
The legend of the Sirens goes back to Greek mythology, where the monstrous women would sing enticing songs and lure sailors to their doom. For Supernatural, the show brought the legend to the land, where these beings now use their voices to lure people to their end. On the show, they are not beautiful in their natural state, as they are hairless and barely human-looking. However, they are shape-changers and can look like whatever their victim most desires to lure them in. They can then tempt them to betray their loved ones.
The Sirens appeared in season 4 of Supernatural when Sam and Dean investigate a small town where men are beating their wives to death. They realize the Sirens are behind this, and soon, the Siren has Sam fighting Dean. It takes a Bronze Dagger coated in their victim's blood to defeat a Siren. In this episode, Bobby stabs Dean with one and then stabs the Siren with the dagger covered with Dean's infected blood to kill it.
26 Soul Eaters
Season 11, Episode 16
Soul Eaters are ancient supernatural creatures that live in another dimension. They feed on human souls after they drag them from the physical world into their nests. Once they get the souls there, they are trapped forever and remain there even if their body perishes. The problem here is that for the longest time, hunters believed that Soul Eaters couldn't perish. It took a Celtic Sigil to entrap them.
However, the British Men of Letters learned that placing the Sigil in the nest could turn the Soul Eater to dust and set the victims' souls free. The main Soul Eaters in Supernatural were in season 11 with the Michigan Soul Eaters. Bobby and Rufus once worked on this haunting, and Sam and Dean researched it in the Men of Letters' archives to figure out how to beat them. They had to create two sigils, and when Dean gave himself up to the Soul Eater to draw one inside the nest, they proved this monster could die.
25 Wendigo
Season 1, Episode 2
One of the earliest Supernatural monsters introduced was the Wendigo, which Sam and Dean Winchester had to defeat in the second episode of the series. Wendigos come from Algonquian mythology and are cannibalistic creatures that can possess humans. They also possess super speed and are immortal. These are some of the most challenging creatures to kill.
It takes fire to end the life of a Wendigo. The problem is that they are very fast and smart enough to avoid the heat. Anasazi symbols can keep them at bay and protect individuals from becoming prey. In the episode where Sam and Dean fight the monster, the creature is smart enough not to let Dean lead it into a trap. However, the Wendigo likely didn't expect Dean to circle back around and shoot it in the chest with a flare gun, killing it instantly.

20 Most Powerful Characters In Supernatural, Ranked
Supernatural has featured a lot of all powerful characters. Some are incredibly dangerous, while others are more bark than bite.
24 The Scarecrow
Season 1, Episode 11
The Scarecrow was a Supernatural monster in season 1 in an episode of the same name. As expected, this is a living scarecrow in a field that takes its victims by luring them from the road. The Scarecrow also seemed unbeatable, as Dean's gun did not affect it. The Scarecrow turned out to be a manifestation of the Norse God Vanir.
The townspeople sacrificed strangers to it to keep their community "blessed." The only way to destroy this monster is to burn the sacred tree that gave it power. This definition makes the Scarecrow less of a living monster and more of a mythological pagan god. When Dean and Sam try to kill it, it turns on the people who worshipped it. Once Sam and Dean destroy the tree with the help of a woman named Emily, the Scarecrow dies forever.
23 Rakshasa
Season 2, Episode 2
For everyone who hates clowns, the Rakshasa can be pretty scary. Based on Hindu myths, these creatures feed a few times every 20 to 30 years. If its appearance isn't clear, this monster homages Stephen King's Pennywise in It. These creatures eat human flesh, sleep on deceased insects, and can shapeshift to appear as humans -- primarily clowns. They have superhuman strength and speed. They can also become invisible. However, they can't enter a home without someone inviting them in. They are invulnerable to everything except brass.
They appeared in the second season of Supernatural, and this version of the Rakshasa took the form of a clown who followed children home from the fair. He would then get the children to invite him in, where he would eat their parents. Barry Papazian, the blind knife thrower in the carnival, is the Rakshasa, and Dean kills him with a brass pipe from the pipe organ while fighting in a funhouse.
22 Daeva
Season 1, Episode 16
The Daeva is a savage and animalistic demon that appeared in the first season of Supernatural. The one thing that holds back the Daeva is that they have to be summoned or conjured. However, they will attack the person who summons them and the target they are sent after. They are invisible, but their shadows are not. Powerful demons mainly use them as tools to take out their enemies.
They can teleport, have super strength, and have dangerous claws. Since they are demons, they won't perish, but light can repel them, and black magic can control them. In Supernatural, the demon Meg conjures up the Daeva, and she has complete control over the demon until her black altar's destruction. While Sam, Dean, and John Winchester can't beat them, Sam repels them with a flare gun, giving them nowhere to manifest.
