I still think that the most surprising kill in The CW's Sam and Dean Winchester face tough foes but normally prevail — not only is the plot on their side, but various cosmic forces appear to be, too. These key allies may have helped see Dean through a big win that I did not see coming.

Jared Padalecki's Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles' Dean had reasonably low stakes in their hunting game throughout the first season, providing reams of series-topping standalone episodes. But from season 2 onward, the series started diving into its canonical plot more and more, leading up to one of season 10's best moments. As soon as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse — War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death — appeared, I knew we were in for a treat. And season 10 delivered when Dean finally killed Death.

One of Dean Winchester's best kills in Supernatural must be Death in season 10, who I did not foresee being felled by Dean's blade. For one, there is something oddly likable about Julian Richings' Pale Horseman, and for a moment there, I really thought he was going to be Dean's ally. But I also estimate Death as one of Dean's hardest kills, if not the hardest, and certainly the most unlikely. Not only is killing Death a literally biblical feat, but it provides one of the series' best last-minute twists and the perfect end to the season.

The Winchesters Were A Force Of Nature By Season 10

They may have started Eric Kripke's unique road story as hunters, but Sam and Dean became cosmic heroes on a far bigger scale by season 10, as Death's defeat proved. The Winchesters seem to power up in new ways with every season of Supernatural, despite dipping in and out of the grave. With each impediment the brothers suffer, from the Mark of Cain to demonhood, they learn new tricks that empower them to beat their enemies. And it became clear that a mysterious Chuck Shurley (Rob Benedict) may have had something to do with this.

As Supernatural went on, Chuck Shurley became its central mystery and, in season 11, a major protagonist. Following on from Dean's assassination of Death, the Winchesters' luck appeared more and more defined. Of course, Chuck had been watching over them and protecting them for quite some time, making their importance in global events far beyond hunters. Chuck was the real villain of Supernatural in the end, necessitating the brothers to move beyond God himself as the shepherds of world safety. As Dean killed Death, it was obvious that he and his brother were becoming this important in Supernatural.
