Summary

  • Superman's new all-white costume, acquired during his space journey, is kryptonite-proof and protects him from radiation.
  • The costume's ability to block radiation makes it an effective defense against kryptonite-wielding villains like Metallo and Lex Luthor.
  • With his new suit, Superman can overcome his weakness to kryptonite and no longer needs to worry about his enemies exploiting this vulnerability.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Superman: Lost #8!The newest costume in Superman's wardrobe has a secret benefit that's helping him conquer his oldest Achilles' heel. The Man of Steel's far-out trip to space left the hero distant and aloof. But if any good came from Clark Kent's incredibly long trek, it's his new costume that makes kryptonite completely non-threatening.

In Superman: Lost #8 by Christopher Priest and Carlo Pagulayan, Superman is on Earth and he's still trying to adjust to life after living out in space for two decades. The hero is out in the middle of the ocean confronting a dramatically improved Metallo, who now inhabits a kaiju-sized body after absorbing several warships.

Superman tries to talk with Metallo, but it doesn't work. Fortunately, Supergirl comes in, wearing the Personal Survival Kit costume Clark acquired in space. Kara notes that while Superman's all-white suit isn't lead-lined, it does protect from radiation, rendering Metallo's kryptonite heart useless.

Superman All-White Suit DC

Superman: Lost is a story that sees Clark experience one of the most harrowing journeys of his life. Superman traveled through a singularity and wound up trillions of light-years from Earth. Though he was able to settle on a suitable planet, he did everything in his power to come home. During his adventure, he acquired a P.S.K, or Personal Survival Kit, which included an all-white costume. The new suit was described as a 'solar uniform' and was able to store and distribute solar energy to level out Clark's powers while traveling great distances. That said, Clark described the suit as inefficient, likening it to powering a Tesla with a pair of double-A batteries.

While the Personal Survival Kit might not do much good for Kryptonians in the way of enhancing their solar-based abilities, it seems to do quite well at blocking out radiation. This makes sense given that it was designed for space travel and its designers likely weren't sure if Superman was capable of surviving cosmic radiation or not. Obviously, Clark can handle exposure to radiation in space, but he does struggle against the radioactive silvers of his home planet. Even just the smallest piece of kryptonite can bring the mighty Superman to his knees. But with this new costume, any villain that uses kryptonite has no shot at harming the Big Blue Boy Scout.

Kryptonite-Wielding Villains Are No Match For Superman's New Suit

Metallo, Reactron, the Kryptonite Man, and even Lex Luthor all use kryptonite of some sort. But no matter how many times they've battled, they always manage to get the drop on Superman and use kryptonite to hurt him. While he always manages to eke out a victory, having a suit that protects him from the radiation would go a long way. Superman wouldn't need to worry about his enemies getting the upper hand and he could save lives that much faster. Granted, the glowing white suit isn't the image fans are used to. But if it means making his weakness to kryptonite a thing of the past, then Superman has no excuse not to use his new all-white costume more often.
