Superman has accomplished incredible feats over his 80-plus year comic discography, yet it looks like his son, Jon Kent, is aiming to outdo his old man once and for all by accomplishing something no Kryptonian has ever done before: Kryptonite immunity. With DC teasing this bold new development, fans can’t help but wonder how it will reshape the power hierarchy of DC’s Kryptonians.

Jon Kent may accomplish something that even Superman, after decades of heroism, has not been able to do.

Paul Kaminski, DC Comics’ group editor, recently shared with Voice Film some exciting details about Dan Slott, Rafael Albuquerque, and Marcelo Maiolo’s Superman Unlimited series, particularly regarding Jon Kent’s role.

Going beyond simply confirming that Jon will have a substantial part in the series, Kaminski revealed that the hero will undergo rigorous training to overcome his vulnerability to Kryptonite. This statement almost sounds too fantastical, even for a comic book setting, given that if there is one constant across Superman and Super-Family lore, it is that the glowing green rock has always been and was always expected to be their greatest weakness. Now, it seems DC is preparing to shake up the status quo.

Voice Flim quotes Kaminski as saying he really hopes to build Jon’s character out in the Superman Unlimited series, with one of the main ideas he envisions being “Jon training on a mountain like Gohan to overcome Kryptonite and doing so somehow.” While Jon’s invulnerability to Kryptonite hasn’t yet materialized in the comics, it feels all but guaranteed given the authority Kaminski speaks with as the Group Editor of the Superman group at DC Comics. This is an incredibly exciting development for fans, as both Jon’s journey to overcome Kryptonite and the larger implications promise to be more than compelling.

Kaminski teases that Jon’s journey may visually and perhaps even tonally resemble how Gohan trains alone in the mountains to grow stronger, though the exact details remain vague. With Dan Slott and Rafael Albuquerque writing the series, it will be interesting to see how they bring Kaminski’s vision to life on the page. There will no doubt need to be some heavy lifting when it comes to factual exposition, as Jon’s newfound invulnerability will have to be presented in a way that readers can understand and believe. This will be a creative challenge given Kryptonite’s long and storied history, but the payoff of a Kryptonian who is immune to Kryptonite could be massive.

Paul Kaminski: I really hope to build out Jon in [Superman Unlimited]. And… sometimes I have these like, they are less of story markers for people but more importantly like images to follow through on and one of the images I have on my head is Jon training on a mountain like Gohan to overcome Kryptonite and doing so somehow. So that’s the goal here is to like show this as an exploration of this family.

Superman Unlimited Sets the Stage for Jon to Defy Kryptonian Limits

Superman Unlimited provides the perfect backdrop for Jon’s journey to overcome Kryptonite, thanks to its high-stakes premise. Slott and Albuquerque’s storyline raises the danger of Kryptonite like never before, with a massive asteroid showering Earth in the radioactive rock. As a result, Kryptonite saturates the streets and criminal networks, placing Superman and his family’s greatest weakness into the hands of both petty criminals and powerful villains. In this context, Jon’s goal of achieving Kryptonite immunity becomes not only relevant but essential.

If Jon succeeds, he would become the first Kryptonian in main continuity to fully resist Kryptonite, making him the only member of the Super-Family capable of operating freely during this global crisis. His immunity would instantly set him apart, reshaping the power dynamics of the Super-Family and positioning him as one of its most powerful . This development could even place Jon Kent above the Man of Steel himself, as a Kryptonian free from the very weakness that has defined their limits for decades.

Jon Kent’s Kryptonite Immunity Could Be His Greatest Feat Yet

Jon Kent overcoming Kryptonite seems like an impossible feat, especially given that he has been portrayed as more vulnerable to it than his father. In Secret Six #2 by Nicole Maines and Stephen Segovia, for instance, Deadshot hits Jon with a synthetic Kryptonite capsule, which immediately incapacitates him. Floyd notes that the capsules aren't that potent and it would have taken multiple doses to bring down Superman. Therefore, if Jon, who has a greater sensitivity to Kryptonite, can overcome this weakness and become invulnerable to it, it would be a remarkable achievement. He would accomplish something that even Superman, after decades of heroism, has not been able to do.
