Warning! Spoilers ahead for Secret Six #1!If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that DC Comics is setting up about Superman and Lois Lane, but rather their son, Jonathan.
Absolute Power put a lot of heroes through the wringer, especially those in the younger generations. Not only did Amanda Waller blackmail Dreamer into betraying her friends and killing Jay Nakamura's mother to take over Gamorra, but she also nearly turned Jonathan into a weapon of war. Now these tensions are starting to build, and I think the end result is the destruction of one relationship and the beginning of a new one.
Jonathan Kent's Relationship with Jay Might Be Swapped for Dreamer
Honestly, I Wouldn't Be Heartbroken to See It Happen
In Secret Six #1 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands, Jonathan, Jay, and Nia are all trying to move on after the events of Absolute Power. Jon is concerned by Jay’s hyperfixation on keeping an eye on Amanda Waller in prison, while Dreamer is plagued with bad dreams that also focus on Waller. One evening, Jon tries to help both of his loved ones with a dinner for the three of them to talk and try to heal together. Unfortunately, the dinner is put on pause when Dreamer reveals Amanda Waller has gone missing.
Superman, Dreamer, and Gossamer all head out to Belle Reve to investigate, but Jay is adamant about not working with Nia. Nia apologizes to the group repeatedly but Jay refuses to hear her, still in pain over Dreamer’s role in killing his mother. The team makes it inside, but Jay refuses to let up on his attacks on Nia, to the point where Jon gets visibly upset by Jay’s behavior. However, the three are barely able to sweep the scene before they’re attacked by Belle Reve’s guards.
...Jay refuses to hear her, still in pain over Dreamer’s role in killing his mother.
Fortunately, Black Alice, Dreamer’s former Suicide Squad teammate, is locked up in the same area and offers to tell them where Waller went. As the guards attack, Black Alice strikes a deal with Gossamer and Dreamer against Jon’s wishes. Dreamer is hit by a couple of tranquilizer darts and Jay frees Black Alice. The group uses Dreamer’s powers to escape Belle Reve and transport all the way to the House of Secrets in Vermont, where they emerge from Catman’s head as Deadshot curses the young metahumans out.
Jon and Jay Seem to Be Fizzling Out, Time to Bring in Dreamer?
They Had Real Chemistry That DC Should Capitalize On
I'm not gonna lie, when Jon was first aged up, I was angry at the sudden push and development he got. Not that I minded Jon being an openly bi Superman, I was just miffed that his time as Superboy was over before it really thrived. And I recognize that a lot of people liked Jon and Jay's relationship and it was validating seeing more open same-sex couples. Maybe it was the speed at which their relationship developed or maybe I'm just not a Jay fan. Either way, I've never been a shipper when it came to Superman and Gossamer.
On the other hand, I've actually liked the growing bond between Jon and Nia. They had a fun friendship that grew after she was properly introduced into the DC Comics canon. And truth be told, they had a real connection during last year's Absolute Power: Super Son one-shot (also written by Maines). They were both people whose lives had been upended by Amanda Waller, but it was Dreamer who helped Jon come back from the brink. Even back then, before Jon strongly defended Nia in Secret Six, I had an inkling something was there between these two.
...I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jay and Dreamer become an official couple soon.
I could understand why DC would be hesitant to break up Jay and Jon. They are one of the most prominent queer couples right now. Some may balk at the idea of the junior Superman ending his same-sex relationship for a more heteronormative one with Dreamer. But being with a woman like Nia doesn’t make Jon any less bi, and Dreamer has been a great example of trans representation and is no less deserving of a relationship as well. With how things seem to be going, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jay and Dreamer become an official couple soon.
I Definitely See Superman and Dreamer Being the End Goal
Maybe Not Immediately, But They'll Find One Another Over Time
Granted, Secret Six is a miniseries, and it's doubtful we'll get a breakup between Jay and Jon and a new relationship with Dreamer in just a few issues (at least I hope so, because this book should be more than just relationship drama). But I see cracks forming between Jon and Jay and anyone with eyes can see there's a chemistry between Nia and Jay. While I don't expect a relationship to form between Superman and Dreamer just yet, I could see it happening sooner than we thought.
