Superior Spider-Man Resurrects A Beloved (And Controversial) Series
The original Superior Spider-Man series by writer Dan Slott and artist Ryan Stegman spun out of the 2013 storyline "Dying Wish," in which a dying Doctor Octopus implanted his mind into the body of Peter Parker. When Doc Ock's body died, Peter died with it, leaving a rejuvenated Otto Octavius free to operate within the original Spider-Man's body. Dubbing himself the "Superior Spider-Man," Octavius carried on the web-slingers heroics with a colder and more ruthless style. The result was a mixed bag for Spider-Man, as Otto alienated a lot of Peter's friends and allies, while also improving his life in other ways, such as earning him a doctorate and launching Parker Industries. Eventually Peter was able to win back control of his body from Octavius, who was seemingly killed (though he has since come back in his own body).
In preparation for the Superior Spider-Man Returns one-shot, Slott discussed how he wanted to revisit Superior Spider-Man for its 10th anniversary with a story that has an impact on Peter Parker's current life while not repeating what's been done before. "Superior Spider-Man Returns is going to take an untold Superior tale, and drag it kicking, screaming, and violently exploding into the present. It's going to give you everything you liked about Superior but in new surprising ways. No time travel. No clones. And no way we're telling you how. Read the book!”
After his time as the (Not So) Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus' memories were altered. He apparently re his time as Spider-Man, but does not his time as Peter Parker. Marvel has hinted in recent issues of The Amazing Spider-Man that he may be on the verge of regaining his memories. In The Amazing Spider-Man #29 by Zeb Wells and Ed McGuinness, Octopus equips himself with all-new tentacles and kidnaps the reformed Norman Osborn. He knows that parts of his memory are missing and is determined to get them back by any means necessary.
Marvel has not revealed much else about the all-new Superior Spider-Man ongoing series, but fans can expect more news and teases to be announced before the first issue is released on November 15.
