After James Gunn became co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, he made huge moves signaling a more exciting future for DC, which included the announcement of DC movies.

Supergirl might not be the most famous DC superhero, but the character has never gotten the justice she deserves, as the 1984 movie was a critical disaster and a box office bomb (via the DC Universe's Chapter 1.

Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow Latest News

First Look At Supergirl Costume

With Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow currently filming, the first set photo reveals what Supergirl's costume looks like, as it seems to be quite close to the comic it is adapting. The photo comes courtesy of X @UnBoxPHDFILM, and Supergirl is seemingly locked into some battle or fight with a military unit of some sort. Given that the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic takes place entirely in space, it's likely that she is fighting someone on another planet in this photo.

What stands out about Supergirl's costume so far is the red skirt and boots, which wasn't guaranteed to be the case for the DCU given that the last adaptations of the character di away with them, but it seems like the movie wants to stick as close to Supergirl's aesthetic from the comic as possible. It will be exciting to see the official costume reveal that DC Studios puts out in the future, as well as footage of it in action. There's A Summer 2026 Release Date

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to release in cinemas on July 26, 2026, over a full year after DCU's Superman movie releases on July 11, 2025 — making it a naturally crucial part of the Chapter 1 DCU timeline due to its early placement. This placement is perhaps ideal in of not being set too close to the DCU's film debut, but not so far away that a potential tease of Kara's future could be forgotten by audiences entirely in the time between the two releases.

Production of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow seems to be going smoothly, as James Gunn gave an update regarding how far along the movie is. The biggest news is that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is about halfway through filming, which means it is making good time to hit its 2026 release date while also giving VFX artists enough time to finish. Gunn also talked about how great the script is and how Craig Gillespie was perfect for directing the film. The full statement from Gunn during the DC Studios press event is as follows:

Yeah, I think we're midway through production now of Supergirl. It's so scary every time I say it, but it's been an extraordinary experience so far. The script was one of the first things that we greenlit when we got here. Ana [Nogueira] turned in a marvelous first script that just kept getting better. She's been a blessing, and Craig Gillespie was a dream for me. I, Tonya was one of my favorite movies, and he has been everything that I would hope for a director on a big project like this [when] working with him as a studio head. Which is weird to say, but I love working with him.

Milly Alcock will be taking on the role of Supergirl in the film. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic creator Tom King added his approval as well on social media, describing the decision to go with Alcock as "perfect casting."

Milly Alcock's Supergirl is rumored to appear before her own solo movie in Superman, though nothing official has yet been announced by James Gunn or DC Studios.

Alongside Milly Alcock as the titular hero, a few of the other cast have been announced. Matthias Schoenaerts has also been announced as part of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow cast, playing Krem of the Yellow Hills, the main villain of the story, with Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle. Jason Momoa returns for another DC role, this time playing Lobo. Supergirl's parents, Zor-El and Alura, are played by David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham.

James Gunn and Peter Safran talked about Jason Momoa playing Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a major casting choice that had been rumored for years, and one of the most exciting developments for the DCU. Gunn talked about Momoa texting him right after the casting was announced and how he had no problems with him playing Lobo even after playing Aquaman, stating:

Jason [Momoa] was literally the first text I got after this was announced. His text was - lemme see if I can it. I think it was "Lobo, baby!" All in Capital Letters with 10 million exclamation points. Essentially, I was like, "I think that's a pretty good idea." So, it was always part of the plan. I had no problems whatsoever with him having played Aquaman before.

Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow Story Details

It'll Follow The Comic Of The Same Name

While Supergirl sounds like a more light-hearted movie compared to Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Swamp Thing, it could be exactly the opposite. Based on James Gunn's comments about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow when he confirmed its development, the movie's story has a real chance of being some of the DCU's more intense viewing.

Gunn explained that audiences will see "Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth." (via THR) Gunn added that she's "not the Supergirl we’re used to." This raises a lot of potential for the movie, as it suggests the plot could go in directions viewers may not be expecting beforehand.

Gunn also overtly referenced comic book writer Tom King, who created the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, meaning that the movie will likely be heavily based on the story. The comic book, which was published as recently as 2022, is considered some of the best material about the superhero.

It follows Supergirl, who is ed by an alien girl who had her entire planet destroyed and wants revenge on the people who destroyed it. And as has become typical of Gunn's movies, the comic book features a cute, supernatural animal, meaning Krypto the dog has a very real chance of featuring in the DCU film.

The reports that Matthias Schoenaerts will be playing Krem of the Yellow Hills also appear to shed more light on what to expect from the story of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, as Krem's conflict with Supergirl is a defining part of the comic story of the same name. This would align with the idea that the DCU Supergirl is set to have a relatively dark story, as the Kryptonian being locked in a battle to the death in her solo movie could easily provide some early brutal moments for the franchise.

Jason Momoa officially playing Lobo in the DCU feels like a dream come true for DC fans, and the actor has made it known that the character has always been a dream job for him. Fans have been anxious to see how Lobo will look in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, as well as how big of a role he will play in the film. Jason Momoa recently talked with Screen Rant's Ash Crossan about playing Lobo, what to expect in of the look of the character, and gave hints about how much he might be in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow:

Ash Crossan: Last time we talked, things had changed significantly. It's really exciting. You're entering this world as another character, Lobo, in Supergirl. He’s not in the comic the movie is based on, so what can you tease about his entrance and the greater plan? What are you most excited about?

Jason Momoa: Well, this is the role I've always wanted to play. That’s the comic I loved, so I'm really nervous about it. It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character. It's pretty big. I don't want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I'll say the bike’s really cool.

Ash Crossan: Do you think we'll be hanging out with him for a while?

Jason Momoa: I hope so. I hope so. I hope so. It’s her movie, so it's great. I just come in for a little bit.

Though it is unlikely that Supergirl will be in James Gunn's Superman, there's a small chance that Superman could have some kind of involvement in the events of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In the same blurb given by Gunn about this movie, the writer/director also mentioned the Man of Steel, noting, “We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl."

It isn't clear whether Gunn is simply referring to how the character will be different from Superman or if they'll actually share the screen, though either avenue holds real potential for both characters and the new world they will inhabit.
