One fan's work is showing off the comedic rivalry Supergirl seem to have found themselves in. While Kara and Dick hint at a frosty past in the pages of Batman/Superman: World's Finest, artist Gabriel Larragán is giving readers what they want: more of the Boy Wonder and the Girl of Steel picking on one another.
The relationship between the Super Family and the Bat-Family has always made for some interesting interactions. Fans know that Superman and Batman have often had their differences with one another, but that hasn't always been the case with the newer generations. Some partners, such as Conner Kent and Tim Drake are regarded among DC's best bromances. Other relationships, such as Damian Wayne and Jon Kent, were a bit more slow to warm up before forging an extremely strong bond. Now, a look back at Dick Grayson and Kara Zor-El's careers shows that early interactions between the two were quite chilly to say the least. Fans loved seeing Robin and Supergirl bicker with each other in Batman/Superman: World's Finest #2 by Mark Waid and Dan Mora. While whatever made the two heroes so standoffish has only been hinted at, it hasn't stopped fans from loving the new dynamic.
On Twitter, Gabriel Larragán posted a picture of Dick and Kara with the message "I met @Danmora_c last Saturday and got myself the first two issues of world’s finest, I fell in love with his designs for robin and supergirl". Larragán's piece features the two heroes sitting on the couch, with Robin saying "World's" and Supergirl saying "Finest". Aside from accurately portraying the costumes Kara and Dick wear in the series, Larragán nails their juvenile rivalry by having Robin giving a bemused Supergirl a pair of bunny ears.
Larragán racked up the likes and the retweets over the work, with s gleefully embracing the chill, yet antagonistic vibe the two put out. And if the adulation from thousands wasn't enough, Larragán got the approval from World's Finest artist Dan Mora, who replied directly to the humorous piece. Truly, the work speaks to how receptive fans are to Supergirl and Robin's new quarrel. While previous fanart has imagined a conflict between Damian and Kara, it is funny to see Dick in a far more childish and petty mood than fans would be used to.
It's interesting to see Dick be so unusually cold to anyone, considering he's one of the most well-connected heroes in the DC Universe. Same for Kara, who is known for her peppy, easygoing nature. Seeing two such friendly superheroes be so combative is a bit odd, but it does make for a more engaging read. Not to mention the mysterious incident mentioned by Dick and Kara has fans dying to know details on what started the bad blood. While some might think it's a reference to Supergirl getting fired from the Teen Titans, that wouldn't make sense continuity-wise (and the decision had nothing to do with Dick in the first place). For now, fans are getting a lot of mileage seeing Supergirl and Robin carry on their childish feud.
