HBO knows a good thing when it sees it, as the pay cabler has renewed Succession for season 3. Undoubtedly the best show on TV at the moment and perhaps even the most relevant, the series takes a darkly comedic look at family dysfunction and the ways in which the wealthy are afforded an undue level of influence in the world, and the often irresponsible, profit-driven ways they wield that power. And after netting five Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, it seems HBO is eager to stay in business with the Roy family, thanks in large part to its entertainingly self-destructive ways.
The series kicked off in 2018 as an early summer entry that also helped fill the void left by The Wire. And just two episodes into its second season, HBO is ready to green light a third go-round with Logan Roy and his billionaire brood.
HBO announced the news today in an official press release that covered the highlights of the series itself and its caustic view of the super rich. sca Orsi, executive vice president, HBO Drama Programming had this to say about the season 3 renewal:
“We are elated that SUCCESSION and its exploration of wealth, power and family has resonated so powerfully with audiences. We cannot wait to see how the complex characters that Jesse Armstrong has created continue to navigate this captivating, ruthless world of the uber-rich. In today’s world where the intersection of politics and media is increasingly prevalent, SUCCESSION presents an especially piercing look behind the curtain of this elite, influential, and cutthroat community.”
The series has been on an incredibly winning streak since about half-way through the first season (some say it got off to a slow start, though it didn’t), as series creator and showrunner Jesse Armstrong and his writers’ room have continued to make Logan, Kendall, Roman, Shiv, and Connor some of the most captivating characters on television today. And then there’s frequent episode MVPs cousin Greg (Nicolas Braun) and Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), who help round out an absurdly watchable ensemble, and now will continue to do so for at least another year.
Succession continues next Sunday with ‘Hunting’ @9pm on HBO.
