Bethesda's RPG Starfield is set to be an open-world story set in space, currently slated for a November 11, 2022, launch. Starfield premiered its first trailer during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, teasing what fans can anticipate. Now, amidst Gamescom 2021, Bethesda has posted three short YouTube videos introducing three Starfield locations.
Despite Starfield's presence at E3 2021, not much is known about the game, save that it's an adventure in space seeking to answer one of the great mysteries of humanity. Players will be able to create their own custom characters and work with the organization Constellation to explore the far edges of the galaxy. So far, only human characters have been shown, but it's possible as more information about Starfield comes out, other playable races will be introduced. Because Bethesda is known for its open-world universes with deep lore, such as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, many fans assume the Starfield universe will have the same depth and texture, even if all the details haven't been revealed yet.
On August 26, Twitter three locations in Starfield. Though the videos are quite short in length, they do provide names and backgrounds for what will likely be key locations in the game. Here's everything revealed about Starfield's confirmed locations so far.
Starfield Location: Neon
Described as a "pleasure city," Neon is located on an as-of-yet unnamed water planet. The concept art shown in the video was also revealed during Starfield's E3 presentation. It shows a giant city, brightly lit against a dark sky, anchored above a vast ocean. Below the platform are aquatic and space ships alike, ranging in size and quality. The video can be view here.
Neon's history is fascinating, as well as illuminating some of the challenges that likely await players in Starfield. A corporation called Xenofresh came to the planet in hopes of developing a fishing settlement. However, when they discovered the fish had psychedelic properties, they decided to manufacture a drug called Aurora. According to the video, Aurora is only legal on Neon, and the pleasures of the city attract people from all over the galaxy - not unlike an interstellar Las Vegas.
Starfield Location: New Atlantis
New Atlantis is a city in Starfield, which is the capital of the United Colonies (UC). Bethesda's reveal video shows a spaceport within the city, which looks like a thriving civilization not unlike Coruscant from Star Wars. Buildings reach into the sky, spotlights twirl through the air and traffic can be seen all the way from the dock. The video for New Atlantis can be viewed here.
According to the video, the UC is the largest and strongest political presence in the Starfield universe with military power to match. It's still unclear if Constellation is working in tandem with the UC or in opposition to it, but the faction is an interesting new piece to the Starfield puzzle. New Atlantis is also described as diverse, representing every "race, creed, and ethnicity," though the video fails to specify if this includes alien species.
Starfield Location: Akila
From civilization to the outskirts of the universe, Akila is introduced as the capital of the Freestar Collective, an alliance between three star systems in Starfield. Unlike New Atlantis, Akila seems like less of a traditional capital and more of an outpost. The concept art shows two large, worn structures with caravan-like buildings surrounding them. The video for Akila can be viewed here.
Though not shown in the concept art, Akila is surrounded by Oshta, deadly aliens native to the planet that Bethesda describes as "a cross between a wolf and a velociraptor." It's still unclear what role Akila has to play in Starfield, but it should provide plenty of exciting adventures for players.
