Stardew Valley, the iconic farming cozy game, is full of items to collect, sell, and donate. Gunther, the curator of the local museum, is always accepting rare artifacts and gems to display, which includes some of the rarest items in the game. Most of the time, players should send their first find over to him, but for a select few rare items, it's best to hold off from donating.

Some of the rarest items in Stardew Valley have a tiny spawn rate under perfect conditions, and finding them can be an arduous task. The rarest two are not only difficult to obtain, but have far better uses than sitting on the library’s shelf. It's why you should never sell them to the museum.

You Should Keep The Dinosaur Egg In Stardew Valley

Create Your Very Own Jurassic Park

The Dinosaur Egg is one of the rarest items in Stardew Valley. This prehistoric item isn’t just a fossil for the museum, but a real egg that can produce a real dinosaur, under the right circumstances. In the early stages of the game, finding a Dinosaur Egg is almost impossible, as its drop rate is incredibly low. Easy locations like artifact spots in the Quarry have a 0.6% drop rate, while finding an egg in a treasure chest from fishing has a measly range of 0.7 to 0.8%.

Once players get access to the Skull Caverns, the task of finding an egg becomes (relatively) easier. On Prehistoric Floors in the Skull Caverns, both Dinosaur Eggs and Pepper Rex monsters will spawn. The eggs can be foraged straight from the floor, but the dino mobs only have a 10% chance of dropping an egg once they’ve been killed. Unfortunately, the Skull Cavern doesn’t work like the Mines, so Prehistoric Floors don’t have a standard floor number. Instead, they rarely spawn randomly after floor 7.

This makes even finding a monster or area that spawns Dinosaur Eggs incredibly rare, so obtaining one is extremely lucky. The best thing to do with the very first Dinosaur Egg is to keep it saved for the incubator. By placing a Dinosaur Egg in the incubator inside a Big Coop – and making sure there’s an empty slot in the coop for a new animal – players can hatch their very own dinosaur. It takes quite a while for a dinosaur to hatch, but once it does, players will have their own tame green friend who will lay more dinosaur eggs every seven days.

The very next egg players get from their dinosaur can then be donated to the museum, but now players will have a steady source of money from Dinosaur Mayonnaise, which sells for 800g each. Standard mayo sells for 190g, so with a couple dinosaurs on the farm, players can regularly rake in the gold. This makes not donating the first Dinosaur Egg to Gunther at the museum an easy choice.

Keep The Elusive Prismatic Shard

Unlock The Greatest Sword In The Valley

The Prismatic Shard is the absolutely rarest mineral in Stardew Valley. Obtaining it can be difficult, and unlike the Dinosaur Egg, it can’t be duplicated as Crystalariums won’t accept it. This means that finding more than one Prismatic Shard will be necessary if players want to unlock everything that requires a Prismatic Shard. While it may be tempting to hand the Prismatic Shard over to Gunther to finally complete the museum, there are plenty of far better uses for the rainbow gem. First and foremost, players need to acquire one, which can be done in a few different ways.

After the very first Prismatic Shard has been found, the first thing players should do is head to the Calico Desert to get a Galaxy Sword. This weapon is the best in the game, dealing 60 to 80 damage with every hit, alongside +4 speed, which makes clearing out monsters a breeze. All players need to do to get the sword is hold their Prismatic Shard and walk into the center of the three pillars in the desert. There are plenty of other uses for the Prismatic Shard in Stardew Valley, but getting the Galaxy Sword instead of donating it to the museum should always be the first choice.
