Summary

  • One rare and spooky addition to Stardew Valley have less than half a percent drop rate.
  • These haunted items can switch clothes with players, move around the house, or change room decor unexpectedly.
  • Moving this item requires a bronze hoe or a bomb, as attempting to do so will result in a jumpscare.

Of all of the new items added to Stardew Valley as part of the 1.6 update, this item has to be one of the creepiest. ConcernedApe added a slew of helpful and interesting items to the game, including the long-requested mannequin. The item acts as a way for players to display the clothing they’re not wearing as though it's their own personal storefront.

But alongside the mannequin, ConcernedApe also added a cursed mannequin. This item is much rarer than its dormant counterpart and twice as terrifying, as players post photos and videos of it blinking, vibrating, and standing over their beds in the morning. Despite the name implying its poltergeist-like shenanigans, spooked players quickly sought its exorcism — while horror lovers moved to add it to their abodes.

How To Get (& Use) Mannequins In Stardew Valley

Newly added in Stardew Valley 1.6, Mannequins give players a fun way to store and display clothing. However, they must be bought rather than crafted.

How To Get The Cursed Mannequin

This Is One Item That Can’t Be Bought

The Cursed Mannequin is a separate item than the regular mannequin, with the only visible difference between the two being its coloring. The regular mannequins are an off-white color, while the cursed mannequin has a purple-gray tinge to its body. Unlike regular mannequins, which can be purchased from Sandy’s shop in the Oasis, cursed mannequins are only dropped by haunted skulls.

These flying foes will attack a player exploring either the mines in the Mountain or in the Quarry Mine. It's currently not locked to a specific number of floors. Its flight pattern is similar to the Serpents and Bats, either attacking the player when approached or screeching before flying from out of the frame. Both the male and female versions of the cursed mannequin have less than half a percent chance of dropping, making it a particularly rare (if unsettling) item.

What Does The Cursed Mannequin Do?

This New Item Goes Bump In The Night

Cursed Mannequin in Stardew Valley with a cave behind it.

When placed in the home, cursed mannequins can do one of three things after the player goes to bed every night. The haunted object may switch clothes with the player, move to a different location in the home, or change the wallpaper or flooring in the room it’s placed in. If the cursed mannequin is not wearing clothes when it swaps with the player, the player will wake up naked.

If any of these events happen, the mannequin will either have blinking human eyes or be vibrating the next morning. Players who have placed multiple cursed mannequins in their home will be able to tell which one committed the act based on these giveaways. Currently, it’s not clear if more than one of these events can happen if a player has multiple cursed mannequins placed.

There is no way for the player to control which of these three things happens — in fact, some players have shared that their cursed mannequins will go nights without moving or causing havoc, leaving them in suspense at the end of every in-game day. But for every player undisturbed by the haunted item, there are two more finding their path bared in the morning after their cursed mannequin moves.

How To Move The Cursed Mannequin Once It's In Your Home

The Mannequin Will Scare Players Who Try To Move It

Once the cursed mannequin is placed, moving it is a different ordeal. While most items in the home can be picked up and placed in a player's inventory using the pick axe (so long as the item isn’t holding anything), the cursed mannequin will not budge. Hitting it with a tool or clicking on the item will only result in the player stripping it of its adorned clothing or swapping the pieces item by item. Players who attempt to move the mannequin multiple times will be jumpscared by a ghost that flies toward the screen out of the item.

Thankfully, players can remove the cursed mannequin, though they’ll need a bronze hoe to do so. Using the upgraded hoe’s power up by holding the left click button will remove it from its stationary spot, allowing the player to pocket it. For those who don’t have the upgraded hoe on them after being locked into their bed or a room by the cursed mannequin, a bomb will also displace it, though it may completely disappear after being blown up.

The bronze hoe can be purchased from Clint for five copper bars and 2,000 gold.

Players cannot sell the cursed mannequin, though it can be thrown away in the garbage can in the inventory menu. Others have claimed to have left it in a villager’s home or placed it in a chest to get rid of it without throwing it away. Once it’s made itself cozy in a living room, though, it’s incredibly hard to get rid of in Stardew Valley.
