Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld.Star Wars’ new TV show, Asajj Ventress’ episodes provide one overarching narrative.

Each Star Wars story can be slotted into one of nine official eras, though only two are relevant to Tales of the Underworld: Fall of the Jedi and Reign of the Empire. The Star Wars timeline can also be organized by year, using the BBY/ABY system. BBY stands for Before the Battle of Yavin, when the first Death Star was destroyed in the original Star Wars movie, and ABY stands for After the Battle of Yavin. So, how do we know when Tales of the Underworld’s stories are set?

Asajj Ventress' "Death" Takes Place During The Clone Wars

The first episode of Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, “A Way Forward,” begins with Asajj Ventress’ resurrection. In the canon novel Star Wars: Dark Disciple by Christie Golden, the Jedi created a convoluted and undeniably dangerous plan to have a Jedi kill Count Dooku, hoping to end the Clone Wars once and for all. The Jedi assigned this mission to Quinlan Vos, one of the Order’s more independent Jedi, and, following Obi-Wan Kenobi’s suggestion, he teamed up with a reluctant Ventress.

Quinlan eventually opened up to the dark side, and he and Ventress fell in love. Though they came close to killing Count Dooku, they failed to succeed, and Asajj tragically died in the process. The first scene of Tales of the Underworld recreates Quinlan and Obi-Wan laying Asajj to rest on her homeworld of Dathomir. We knew from Ventress’ surprise appearance in Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 that she’d been resurrected, and Tales of the Underworld finally explained how (Nightsister magic, of course).

The Star Wars Timeline Explained: All 9 Eras

From the Dawn of the Jedi in ancient times to the founding of the New Jedi Order, the Star Wars canon timeline has a rich history across nine eras.

All of Dark Disciple is set near the end of the Clone Wars, during the Fall of the Jedi era. The Clone Wars began in 22BBY and ended in 19BBY, so Asajj Ventress’ resurrection occurs at some point in 19BBY. This means she returns to life right on the cusp of the Fall of the Jedi era and the Reign of the Empire era.

The Main Asajj Ventress Story Takes Place Approx. 3 Years After Revenge Of The Sith

The rest of Asajj Ventress’ Tales of the Underworld episodes explore one story, set during the Reign of the Empire – her meeting, saving, and even befriending a young Jedi Order 66 survivor. Forced to abandon a relatively quiet life, she learns from the young Jedi about the Hidden Path, a network of underground operatives founded by Quinlan Vos that helps Jedi escape the Empire’s wrath. This network, first introduced in Obi-Wan Kenobi and later revisited in the canon game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, is well hidden, so it takes them a while to find what they’re looking for.

The Hidden Path was in operation for a while, but we know almost exactly when Ventress’ story takes place, thanks to Tales of the Underworld’s second episode, “Friends.” To gain intel about the Hidden Path, Asajj and her new friend Lyco revisit one of Ventress’ old bounty hunter s. They make a deal to help with a bounty in exchange for information about the Path, and this mission involves Jedi Venator ships – Lyco’s knowledge about the starships even gives him away as a surviving Jedi.

The bounty hunter mentions that the Empire is building a “new kind of starship.” The Empire began phasing out the Venator ships for Imperial Star Destroyers roughly three years after the end of the Clone Wars, placing Asajj and Lyco’s adventure around 16BBY. For context, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi: Survivor’s stories take place in 9BBY. Quinlan Vos’ Hidden Path was successful for a while.

Cad Bane's Story Takes Place Before The Prequels

Cad Bane’s Tales of the Underworld episodes follow the more traditional Star Wars: Tales structure, with each episode giving us a glimpse into his life as a youngling – he was previously known as Colby – a young adult, and a fully grown adult. Though the episodes don’t provide any concrete timeline information, we can infer that all three took place before the Clone Wars and likely even before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, which is set in 32BBY.

While Cad Bane’s story in Tales of the Underworld provides an interesting glimpse into the bounty hunter’s former life, Asajj Ventress’ story leaves the door open for so much more.

According to various Star Wars reference books, Cad Bane was born in 62BBY. It seems that roughly 5–10 years between each episode, which would place the final episode of Underworld just before the Star Wars prequel trilogy begins. This makes sense, especially since Cad Bane wasn’t yet a true bounty hunter during Tales of the Underworld, despite that being his main profession during the Clone Wars.

While Cad Bane’s story in Tales of the Underworld provides an interesting glimpse into the bounty hunter’s former life, Asajj Ventress’ story leaves the door open for so much more. How does her story tie into her appearance in Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3, and will we ever see her reunite with Quinlan Vos? Giving her one story instead of three was clearly a deliberate choice, but it remains to be seen when we’ll next see Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld’s Asajj Ventress in the Star Wars timeline.
