I could never have predicted that the Lord of the Rings franchise would provide the perfect explanation of The Rings of Power did. The Rings of Power serves as a prequel to the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy (as well as The Hobbit), specifically following the stories of Galadriel and Sauron long, long before Bilbo or Frodo ever arrived on the scene. This origin story specifically reveals the dynamic Sauron and Galadriel once had and the creation of myriad rings in the franchise.

While that may not sound all that connected to Star Wars movies and TV shows, there is a shocking link between the logic behind the creation of these rings and the purpose of the Mortis Gods. The Mortis Gods were introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and while that show provided some insight, many questions remained. Yet, this one bit of dialogue from The Rings of Power perfectly explains the structure and function of the Mortis Gods in Star Wars.

The Rings Of Power Explained That Balance Requires Three

There Are Three Elven Rings For A Very Specific Reason

The Three Elven Rings of Power in Rings of Power episode 8.

In The Rings of Power, the three Elven Rings were forged by Celebrimbor with Galadriel and Elrond present. As the rings were being forged, the trio discussed the rationale behind the creation of three rings. Galadriel explained that "One will always corrupt. Two will divide." Celebrimbor added, "With three, there is balance."

In part, this likely also stemmed from J.R.R. Tolkien's religious beliefs. After all, one of the most well-known trinities the world over is that of the Holy Trinity: God (the Father), Jesus (the Son), and the Holy Spirit/Ghost. It's possible that George Lucas himself may also have had the Holy Trinity in mind, as this description of the importance of three in The Rings of Power is a perfect explanation of Star Wars' Mortis Gods.

This Is Exactly Why The Mortis Gods Worked (Until They Didn't)

The Intention Behind The Mortis Gods Was Initially The Same

The rationale behind the three Elven Rings in The Rings of Power is precisely why the Mortis Gods had to be a trio in The Clone Wars. In the case of the Mortis Gods, the Son embodied the dark side of the Force, the Daughter embodied the light, and the Father represented balance in the Force. This is a direct representation of why a trinity is essential in maintaining balance in power.

The Son embodied the dark side of the Force, the Daughter embodied the light, and the Father represented balance in the Force.

Just as is articulated in The Rings of Power, one powerful being becomes too easily corrupted, which has been seen time and again not only in franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars but also in countless real-life contexts. Likewise, with just two beings sharing power, they too easily become divided. This is particularly easy to imagine in the case of the Mortis Gods, as the Force is already so binary in Star Wars.

Yet, with three Mortis Gods, the Force was able to be truly kept in balance—with both the light side and the dark side at play. This is particularly interesting given the Jedi's interpretation of the Chosen One prophecy, which was that Anakin would 'bring balance' to the Force by destroying the Sith, essentially snuffing out the dark side and bringing all the power to the light side. Clearly, for innumerable years, this structure with the Mortis Gods worked.

Of course, Anakin Skywalker himself threw this balance into chaos, as, by the time Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano left the planet Mortis, all three Mortis Gods had died (which was due in large part to Anakin's presence). Nevertheless, the Mortis Gods' structure reflects the logic described in The Rings of Power. Interestingly, this insight from The Rings of Power also reveals why the Sith will never win.

The Sith Rule Of Two Will Always Divide

Chancellor Palpatine talking to Anakin in Star Wars Revenge of the Sith

As The Rings of Power makes clear, "two will divide." This is precisely why the Sith simply can never win in Star Wars. The Sith Rule of Two dictates that, at any one time, there is one Sith master and one Sith apprentice. With this dynamic, the Sith master wields power, and the Sith apprentice craves it, ultimately leading the apprentice to overthrow the master and take their place. This is a perfect example of two inevitably dividing, and it has been shown time and again in Star Wars.

With the Ahsoka season 1 finale heavily hinting that the Mortis Gods will be returning to Star Wars, it will be interesting to see where this arc could go next. Yes, the Mortis Gods have died, but that doesn't mean the Mortis Gods' structure can't be replicated by other beings. As we await an update on the Mortis Gods, I remain in awe that The Rings of Power provided this insight in a way that Star Wars hasn't yet done.
