One of Skeleton Crew's standout heroes was the character of Fern, played by Ryan Keira Armstrong. Daughter of a high-profile politician on the planet At Attin, Fern was a confident character who nevertheless showed a surprisingly vulnerable side. She felt incredibly well fleshed-out, largely because of the quality of Armstrong's portrayal.

Ryan Keira Armstrong has now been cast as the new Slayer in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot - essentially meaning she's the new star. After getting some experience with stunts and action in Skeleton Crew, something like Buffy seems perfect for the young actor. Armstrong is now 15, making her just the right age for the role to boot.

Armstrong will, of course, be working closely with the original Slayer - Sarah Michelle Gellar herself. Gellar is a Star Wars alum herself, voicing the Seventh Sister in Star Wars Rebels season 2. The Imperial Inquisitor was a great and intimidating character who faced off against Gellar’s real-life husband, Freddie Prinze Jr.’s character Kanan Jarrus. Having this connection between the two actors makes this Buffy news all the better for fans of both franchises.

It was already looking as though it would be difficult for Lucasfilm to bring back Skeleton Crew's stars, simply because the first season began filming in September 2022 - meaning that all of the kids featured in the show are aging. The showrunners had teased a planned time jump, but the longer we go without an announcement, the less likely it seemed to happen. Now Armstrong's casting seems to be the end of that discussion.

Armstrong is taking on a lead role in what is surely being envisioned as an ongoing show, meaning there will be huge demands on her time - including stunt training, because the role of a Slayer is highly demanding. I simply can't envision a chance for Armstrong to have the time for Skeleton Crew, certainly not for several years. By then, demand will have petered out.

While Skeleton Crew season 2 seems less and less likely, fans can still look forward to seeing Ryan Keira Armstrong kill it as a Slayer. Armstrong's Fern showed just the right combination of maturity and vulnerability, meaning she should be absolutely captivating as a Slayer. This is a high-profile role for a tremendous actor, and it's thrilling to see her given the opportunity to continue shining so brightly.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was announced back in February 2025, but it's unknown when it will go into production.

It’s still unclear what this means for the future of Fern and Skeleton Crew as a whole, but hopefully, Lucasfilm give fans a definitive answer sooner rather than later. Though Skeleton Crew would work fine as a stand-alone, limited series, there are still so many plot points we long to see addressed.
