Star Wars' newest TV show, Qui-Gon Jinn a surprising legacy, 25 years after his on-screen death in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Although Qui-Gon has had very little screen time in Star Wars, he has become increasingly important since his death. In addition to having a lasting effect on both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon has had appearances in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

In both shows, Qui-Gon helped Yoda and Obi-Wan (respectively) learn one of the most difficult Star Wars Force powers: the ability to become a Force ghost. Skeleton Crew has now extended Qui-Gon's legacy in another way, which is entirely separate from him mastering this skill. One specific callback to Qui-Gon Jinn in Skeleton Crew episode 5 reveals how wise the Jedi Master was and how far the Jedi may have fallen since then.

Jod Na Nawood's Advice To Wim Suggests He May Actually Be A Jedi

Jod and Wim sitting down in Skeleton Crew (2024)

Jude Law's mysterious Skeleton Crew character, who has gone by the names Jod Na Nawood, Crimson Jack, and Dash Zentin, to name just a few, has been referred to as a Jedi both in the show and outside it. That has always seemed dubious at best, however, as he has been cagey about the term throughout Skeleton Crew, and Star Wars has been similarly unclear about whether that's the case. Based on episode 5, it seems Jod may be a Jedi after all, as he quoted a line Qui-Gon Jinn had used in The Phantom Menace.

In episode 5, Jod seemed to have a genuine heart-to-heart conversation with Wim after finding him crying aboard the Onyx Cinder. During that conversation, Jod told Wim, "Your focus determines your reality." Interestingly, even the context in which these lines were delivered is quite similar. In The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon said this very thing to Anakin Skywalker. This verbatim repetition of Qui-Gon's line is too exact to be a coincidence.

This verbatim repetition of Qui-Gon's line is too exact to be a coincidence.

Rather than being one of Star Wars' 'rhymes,' these duplicate lines suggest that this was a Jedi teaching that both Jod and Qui-Gon were repeating. In addition to this being one of the most convincing pieces of evidence so far that Jod is in fact a Jedi, this callback also offers Qui-Gon a brilliant legacy. Clearly, Qui-Gon was a wise Jedi Master, who was instilling in Anakin the very values and beliefs of the Jedi, even that early on.

A somber line by Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace is even sadder and more powerful with added context from the Star Wars Legends continuity.

Jod Na Nawood Has Completely Distorted The Jedi Teaching

Jod's Use Of The Line Is Quite Different

Whether Jod is technically a Jedi or not (or if he was raised in the Jedi Order but is no longer a Jedi), it's clear that he is misappropriating the Jedi teachings. This was first true in light of his explanation of attachment. Within the Jedi Order, the rule against attachments was meant to discourage Jedi from feeling possession of or control over other people. While this extended to romantic and familial relationships, it was in no way meant to encourage selfishness or isolation, which is more or less how Jod explains the concept to Wim.

Jod similarly misrepresents the meaning of Qui-Gon's previous line. Rather than encouraging peace and focus within oneself in a way that represents connection with the Force and true selflessness, Jod's interpretation again skews toward self-centeredness. It will be interesting to see whether Jod will be confirmed to be a Jedi in the final three episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, but, in the meantime, Qui-Gon Jinn's legacy lives on in Star Wars.
