Rey Skywalker will be returning to the big screen in a new Star Wars movie set around her work to rebuild the Jedi Order, and the film has the chance to fix a major lightsaber mistake from the sequel trilogy. In a parallel with Luke Skywalker, Rey spent most of the sequel trilogy using somebody else's lightsaber - mostly Anakin's, which she was given by Maz Kanata when she arrived on the planet Takodana. Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber is legendary, with the Chosen One himself having bonded to it.

All this changed in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, though, which technically saw Rey use two new lightsabers. As exciting as this may have been, though, both lightsabers were used sparingly, and viewers never really got the chance to see what they were capable of. This was a big mistake.

The Rise Of Skywalker Wasted Both Of Rey's New Lightsabers

Star Wars 9 Rise Skywalker Rey Red Lightsaber

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker saw Rey use two new lightsabers. The first was seen in a strange vision aboard the wreckage of the second Death Star, with Rey seeing a potential future in which she had turned to the dark side and wielded a red lightsaber. This blade was very unusual, a double-bladed switchblade lightsaber similar to the one used by Jedi Master Pong Krell in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Unfortunately Dark Rey was wasted, with the movie speeding on from that vision.

The final scene of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker showed Rey using a yellow lightsaber, akin to the Jedi Temple Guards or the Jedi Sentinels of Legends - Jedi who “strike a balance between the physical and mental disciplines of the Jedi Order.” Unusually, Rey's lightsaber was in part made from her old staff, a homage to her past on Jakku. Again, though, this was seen only for a moment; viewers never saw Rey build it or use it.

Rey is returning to Star Wars in an movie, and this naturally means there will be scenes in which she triggers her lightsaber - it's impossible to imagine a scenario where a prominent Jedi doesn't trigger their blade. Given this is the case, Rey's next Star Wars movie is guaranteed to resolve a major problem with the sequel trilogy. It will be exciting to see this yellow lightsaber in action at last.
