We're basically getting a new Star Wars movie every week from April 22 through to May 13. The last few years have been rather strange for Star Wars, traditionally seen as a blockbuster movie franchise. For one thing, we haven't had a new movie since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker; the franchise will only be returning to the big screen next year, with The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Instead, Star Wars has moved to the small screen. The Mandalorian served as the launchpad for a constant stream of Disney+ TV shows, of mixed success and quality; the Skeleton Crew season 2. But for all that's the case, from April 22, we're basically getting a new Star Wars movie every week for a block of four weeks.
Andor Season 2 Has A Unique New Release Schedule
We're Getting Three Episodes A Week
Andor is widely praised as the best live-action Star Wars TV show to date. Tony Gilroy's fantastic show is a character study in rebellion, exploring what it really means to stand up against tyranny. It's set to return on April 22 for a second and final season, one following an unusual format. Charting the five years before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and A New Hope, each three-episode block (or "chapter") will essentially be a standalone story set in a different year.
And here's the really exciting thing: Lucasfilm has chosen a totally different release schedule for Andor season 2. We're getting three episodes a week, looking like this:
Release Date |
Episode Drop |
---|---|
April 22, 2025 |
Andor season 2, episodes 1-3 |
April 29, 2025 |
Andor season 2, episodes 4-6 |
May 6, 2025 |
Andor season 2, episodes 7-9 |
May 13, 2025 |
Andor season 2, episodes 10-12 |
Andor has an eye-watering $645 million budget, meaning each chapter has a movie-length budget of roughly $215 million. We don't know the episode runtimes, but Andor season 1 ranged from 38 to 57 minutes in length. Yes, that's right; we're essentially getting a movie every week.
Even Andor Season 2's Tagline Makes It Feel Like A Movie
"A Star Wars Story"
This isn't an accident. Even Andor season 2's new tagline - "A Star Wars Story" - has been chosen to give the same impression. This was the tagline of Lucasfilm's canceled anthology movie series, and was featured with both Rogue One and Solo. Lucasfilm's decision to bring it back is smart marketing, a way of telling viewers we should see this as a cinematic event.
It's been five years since Star Wars was last on the big screen. We'll have to wait one year more. Until then, though, we have Andor season 2 to enjoy - the best Lucasfilm show to date, this time getting the movie treatment.
