Force predators called the Nameless to hunt down and kill Jedi.

Naturally, Master Yoda - already Grandmaster of the Jedi Order during the High Republic Era - wound up on the front lines. Aware of even older events featuring the Nameless, he began his own investigation, attempting to uncover the truth about them. This investigation went badly wrong, and Yoda actually went missing for months, stranded on a harsh volcanic world. Now, Star Wars has explained what happened to him... and how he escaped.

Yoda Was Stranded On Vrant Tarnum

And He Came Close To Dying, Too

Yoda's ship attacked over Vrant Tarnum

Vrant Tarnum is a volcanic moon in the Stygmarn System, and a Force cult known as the Path of the Open Hand had hidden a powerful weapon in ancient ruins there - part of a Force relic known as the Rod of Seasons, which allowed the bearer to control the Nameless. Yoda learned this from a Gran named Tromak who had once been part of the Path of the Open Hand; Tromak agreed to take Yoda to Vrant Tarnum, but insisted the Jedi Master keep their departure secret. Sadly, Yoda arrived at Vrant Tarnum after the Nihil, and his ship was shot down.

Yoda resurfaced months later, having continued his quest to learn secrets of the Nameless. We never learned how he survived his time on Vrant Tarnum, how he escaped, or even what happened to Tromak. Until, surprisingly, the most recent episodes of Young Jedi Adventures season 2 - which tie in directly into the main story of the High Republic Era.

How Yoda Escaped From Vrant Tarnum

We Now Know How He Got Off The Planet

Young Jedi Adventures season 2, episode 21 - appropriately titled "Yoda Rescue" - sees a group of Jedi younglings head into space on a mission to record calls from Star Wars' space whales, the purrgil. They stumble on a transmission from Yoda, desperately seeking help; it's pure luck they even intercepted the SOS, because his transmission was weak. The younglings arrive just in time, because a nearby volcano is about to erupt - and kill Yoda. It's quite striking that Yoda is alone, clearly implying Tromak died in crash.

The aged Jedi Grandmaster doesn't spell out his mission, but it's amazing how well the plot of Young Jedi Adventures season 2 dovetails into the main story of the High Republic Era. The Jedi younglings of Tenoo may be enjoying their own adventures, but the galaxy is currently overshadowed by tragedy. It remains to be seen how future seasons will handle this.
