The Star Wars franchise is so deeply ingrained in pop culture that audiences don’t even have to be a die-hard fan to know characters like Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Darth Vader. But a comic series from 2001 to 2003 flips everything known about Star Wars upside down.
Star Wars: Infinities is a collection of comic book series that provides alternate outcomes to the original trilogy of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. There are four issues per trilogy, each changing factors from canon to create alternate storylines.
Published from 2001-2003 by Dark Horse Comics, each Star Wars: Infinities comic takes place during the particular movie upon which it is based, making each a standalone story. Therefore, fans do not have to read each one individually in order to maintain continuity like in the movies.
Star Wars: Infinities Creates Brand New "What If" Stories That Are Just as Riveting as the Source Material
Dark Horse Comics Took a Classic Marvel Approach
Star Wars: Infinities - A New Hope by Chris Warner and Drew Johnson tells the story of what would have happened if the Rebel Alliance lost their first major battle that kicked off the Galactic Civil War: the Battle of Yavin. Luke becomes consumed with anger, but still trains to become a Jedi with Yoda, determined not to give up on the fight for freedom. Most interestingly, this story also follows Leia Organa as she falls to the Dark Side and is trained as Darth Vader’s apprentice.
Star Wars: Infinities: -The Empire Strikes Back by Dave Land and Davide Fabbri was published in 2002 and deviates from the original Empire Strikes Back on Hoth. There, Luke Skywalker does not survive his order, leaving Han Solo with dying words about Jedi training on Dagobah. Leia is the one to continue Luke’s mission and trains with Yoda to become a Jedi. In a confrontation with Vader after Leia's Jedi training is complete, Vader is mortally wounded and, in his final moments, realizes that Leia is his daughter. Leia is left to restore the Jedi Order.

Princess Leia's New Sith Armor Is Amazing, But It's Not Her Best Dark Side Redesign
As Star Wars reveals Princess Leia's official armored look as Darth Vader's apprentice, fans are getting one of her darkest redesigns ever.
Star Wars Infinities: The Return of the Jedi by Adam Gallardo and Ryan Benjamin was published in 2003. This particular story reimagines almost all the events of the original movie, starting with a failed mission to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt and ending with a redeemed Darth Vader becoming Anakin Skywalker once more and ing his children and the Rebels with a promise to hunt down Palpatine. This series is the only version of the Star Wars: Infinities comics where Darth Vader survives.
Over 20 Years of Star Wars Lore Makes the Future of Star Wars: Infinities Unlimited
More Star Wars: Infinities Stories Are Waiting to Be Told
With the massive success of Marvel’s What If…? Disney+ animated series, comics, and novels, it would be interesting to see Star Wars: Infinities given the same treatment, especially considering the amount of Star Wars series already created by Disney+. Each of these stories is equally riveting and gives the reader the chance to see the original trilogies through a different lens. Bringing these stories to life in an animated format like What If…? would certainly gain the attention of both older and newer generations of Star Wars fans, but there's also plenty of room in Marvel's own Star Wars comics line for a new Infinities series.
There is over 20 years of Star Wars expanded lore that could still be explored, including the prequel and sequel trilogies.
