Modern New Republic Era. Dialogue in the Star Wars sequel trilogy confirmed Luke gathered a group of students, including his nephew Ben Solo, and began what he calls "a training temple" in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But this was not to last.

As revealed in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke's temple was destroyed by Ben Solo, now called Kylo Ren. Flashbacks of Luke Skywalker mourning his temple as it's burning to the ground are shown, and this is what pushed Luke into self-imposed exile. With the destruction of the temple happening offscreen before the start of the sequels, it hasn't been heavily featured in many ways. This leaves it up to other, newer Star Wars stories to fill in the gaps, and expand on Luke's Jedi Academy in very different ways. Let's take a look at all of these appearances in chronological order.

6 Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple Is Constructed In The Book Of Boba Fett

In an unexpected turn for a series about bounty hunter Boba Fett, the construction of the temple is seen in The Book of Boba Fett episode 6. The Mandalorian Din Djarin arrives on the planet Ossus, looking for Grogu, who is away and training with Master Skywalker (the planet was unnamed until Aam Christopher's novel Shadow of the Sith, going unnamed in this episode). The Jedi Temple on Ossus is being constructed out of stone by R2-D2 and an army of ant-droids. Luke's sacred Jedi texts can even be seen in the background of the temple's interior. This shows the earliest foundations of the temple and Luke's Order, but the surrounding terrain appears very different from earlier film & comic appearances. There is a lot of bamboo, many trees, and significant forested mountains in the background.

5 Han And Leia Dropping Ben Solo Off At Luke's Jedi Temple

The temple's second appearance is in the LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation special on Disney+. It is absolutely not canon, but seems to reflect implied canon events, mainly Ben Solo's first arrival on Ossus to be trained. The story shows a young Ben going on one last vacation with his parents before being dropped off at the academy, and is surprisingly heartfelt. In this appearance, the temple grounds are a lot more dirt-covered, and there are seemingly pine trees in the background. The surrounding area is devoid of mountains, and is very much in a plain area. In this location, Ben says farewell to his parents and Chewbacca, and leaves to meet Luke and begin his Jedi path, one that would sadly eventually lead to the dark side.

4 Ben Solo's LEGO Training By Luke Skywalker & The Knights of Ren At The Temple

The third appearance, in the LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, is also not canon - but the glimpse of the Jedi Temple is still interesting. The pine trees and plains of the previous appearance have gone, with the Jedi Temple now sitting next to a body of water, and within walking distance of a settlement on Ossus. This is completely different to previous and future appearances. The short story in the TV special tells a very non-canon story of Ben meeting the Knights of Ren, and becoming frustrated with Luke's training. There isn't much to comment on here other than the vast inconsistencies this story has with canon.

3 Flashbacks To Ben Solo's Jedi Training After The Destruction

After Ben Solo's recruitment into the Knights of Ren following the destruction of the temple, he reflects on his past as a student in The Rise of Kylo Ren comic miniseries by Charles Soule and Will Sliney. Ben trains with his uncle, and fellow student friends Tai, Voe, and Hennix in lightsaber combat, Force usage, and even in philosophical discussion. The comic shows the main temple, other huts, and even the temple landing pad. The Jedi Temple here seems to be made out of a grayish wood, which makes sense given images of the building burning in various other appearances including this comic series. But this does somewhat contradict The Book of Boba Fett's depiction, which was completely made of stone. This leads many to think that the domed hut building seen in that series is a different location than the domed temple structure seen in the Sequels and this series.

2 Jedi Temple Flashbacks in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi

In the actual Star Wars sequel trilogy, the temple is only seen in flashbacks. Star Wars: The Force Awakens shows it very minimally, with Rey seeing Luke kneeling alongside R2-D2 looking at an ambiguous fire. The full scene isn't shown until the next movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with Mark Hamill's riveting performance looking upon the burning structure of the temple. The Last Jedi also shows the moments just before the temple's destruction, Luke's disastrous confrontation with a sleeping Ben Solo. This is inside Ben's wooden hut, the ruins of which Luke is later seen bursting out of to witness the fire. This is the most significant look at the temple as it became, in its final days before its destruction. The flashback appearance is the specific version that The Rise of Kylo Ren comics references for all of its illustrations. There are no trees seen, and no mountains in the background.

1 Kylo Ren's Final Visit To Ossus In Search Of Luke Skywalker After The Last Jedi

Finally, the ruins of Luke's temple appear 6 years later in Star Wars (2020) issue #25, also by Charles Soule. This short-comic story features Kylo Ren, shortly after the events of The Last Jedi. The now-Supreme Leader of the First Order is searching for the Force Ghost of Luke Skywalker, and visits this important site to try to find him. This visual depiction of the Jedi Temple attempts to combine every past visual appearance into one. The temple landing pad from The Rise of Kylo Ren is visible, the mountains and lake are present from The Book of Boba Fett, and the inspiration from the Star Wars sequel trilogy flashbacks is easy to see. The sudden appearance of the mountains is questionable, but in of making all of these conflicting sources work together, this seems pretty definitive.

Going forward, visual depictions of Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple will hopefully become more common. And with that, they will hopefully be more consistent now that the temple has been shown in live-action in The Book of Boba Fett. The temple does have one more significant appearance that is not fully mentioned in this list. The previously mentioned novel Shadow of the Sith actually does feature a few scenes taking place at the temple, but given that it's a novel, there isn't a visual to compare. The novel does, however describe Luke Skywalker's hut as a separate building than the full temple, which could be an explanation for The Book of Boba Fett's hut versus The Last Jedi's big temple. But during the New Republic Era, Luke Skywalker should absolutely be a presence, and his temple should absolutely appear more frequently and consistently as Star Wars continues.
